2010 Northeast Conference Bowling Championship: Lower Seeds Succeed on First Day
|
Throw the seeding out the window. The Northeast Conference Bowling Championship bracket was turned upside down on the first day of the league's second annual postseason tournament. No. 5 seed Fairleigh Dickinson, the defending champion, and No. 6 seed Sacred Heart each won a pair of matches to advance into Sunday's semifinal round unscathed. No. 2 seed Kutztown and No. 4 seed Adelphi are the other two teams that survived day one at Parkway Lanes, but both have a blemish on their records and will be eliminated if they incur another loss. "This is a sample of how high a level of competition our conference creates," said Fairleigh Dickinson head coach Michael Lopresti.

Fairleigh Dickinson senior Erica Perez (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) continued her decorated career by claiming the 2009-10 Northeast Conference Bowler of the Year award while her freshman teammate Danielle McEwan (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) received the NEC Rookie of the Year accolade. New Jersey City’s Frank Parisi garnered NEC Coach of the Year honors as his Gothic Knights celebrated their regular season league crown on the eve of the 2010 Northeast Conference Bowling Championship, which is set for March 20 & 21 at Parkway Lanes in Elmwood Park, NJ. In addition to the major award announcements, the NEC unveiled its All-Conference First and Second Teams along with an All-Rookie Team at its second annual championship banquet. The league's eight head coaches voted on the selections, and were not permitted to vote for members of their own program.

Scottie Reynolds and No. 2 seed Villanova nearly had their NCAA tournament run end in the biggest of upsets. Reynolds responded to his benching with a clutch performance at the foul line in the final minutes of regulation, and the Wildcats survived a scare from Robert Morris in a 73-70 overtime victory Thursday in the NCAA tournament. Karon Abraham scored 23 for Robert Morris (23-13), which was on the brink of becoming only the fifth No. 15 seed to beat a No. 2 and the first since 2001. Abraham - who hit a four-point play earlier in the game - let fly a 25-footer in OT that cut it to 71-70 with 10.2 seconds left, but an off-balance 3 by Mezie Nwigwe at the buzzer was no good.
