NEC Men's Basketball Release (1/5)

Fairleigh Dickinson junior guard Sean Baptiste is the first Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week recipient of the new year. He averaged 25.3 points on 55.6 percent shooting from the field, including 42.3 percent from long range (11-26). Baptiste began the holiday season by scoring 25 points on 8-14 shooting in a loss to Saint Peter’s on December 23rd. He then went for 31 points (including four treys) and nine rebounds at Big East and in-state rival Seton Hall on December 27th. The North Brunswick, NJ native then rang in the new year with a career and NEC single-game season-high 37 points, hitting on 12-18 shots from the floor, 4-6 from three-point range and 9-9 from the charity stripe, as the Knights improved to 2-1 in the NEC with a 72-68 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday. Baptiste is currently averaging 30.3 ppg in three NEC outings this season. Long Island freshman forward Julian Boyd takes home his second Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week honor after averaging 8.0 points and 6.0 rebounds, while shooting 58.8 percent from the floor off the bench for the Blackbirds. In his best game, he netted eight points and took down a career-best 10 boards to go along with two assists and two steals in a 79-68 setback at Charlotte on December 30th.

Long Island University head volleyball coach Kyle Robinson has announced the addition of four student-athletes for the 2009 season. Breanna Cullity (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Cally Fensten (Aurora, Colo.), Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Kelsi Klikus (Colorado Springs, Colo.) all signed National Letters of Intent to join the Blackbirds next season. “I’m very excited to bring this group to Long Island University where they will certainly be the face of our volleyball team for years to come,” Robinson said. “I think they have the ability to build a strong foundation for this program and get us to where we want to be and move along further in the NCAA Tournament. They are all great volleyball players, but they are also great young women and will be great representatives of our university.”

Mount St. Mary's Forward Chris Wheeler Named to the College Soccer News All-Freshman Third Team

Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier), a member of the Mount St. Mary’s men’s soccer team, has been named to the College Soccer News All-Freshman third team. Wheeler, the Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Year, tied the Mount’s Division I record for goals in a season with 12 and added three assists for 27 points. The freshman, who was also named to the All-NEC second team, helped Mount St. Mary’s advance to the NEC Tournament for the fifth time in program history and the first since the 1999 season. He registered both goals the squad scored in the championship game against Fairleigh Dickinson to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. "I’m happy to see Chris receive national recognition for this past year’s accomplishments,” said head coach Rob Ryerson, the NEC Coach of the Year. “I look forward to his continued development and success throughout the remainder of his collegiate career."
