|
Herb Glass booted a first-quarter field goal and the defense recorded its first shutout in an opener since 1979, as UAlbany started the season with a 3-0 victory over Maine before 7,610 fans on Thursday evening at hot and humid Alfond Stadium. UAlbany held off a serious threat in the fourth quarter to record its first season-opening win since 2006. Everyone except for Wagner kicks off the 2010 season during this first week of September. The Northeast Conference slate features eight games over three days against opponents from four different leagues. Perennial title contender UAlbany faces Maine on Thursday night in one of two games that pit an NEC member against a CAA counterpart. The other comes two days later when defending NEC champion Central Connecticut State travels to No. 10 New Hampshire. Bryant and Duquesne are the only two NEC teams playing at home this week, both hosting Patriot League teams on Saturday. The former welcomes Fordham to Smithfield while the latter entertains cross-state rival Bucknell in the Steel City. Monmouth kicks off against defending Patriot League champion Colgate for a second straight season. Robert Morris takes on regional rival Dayton, the Pioneer League’s preseason favorite, while Saint Francis (PA) heads to three-time defending Big South champion Liberty. Sacred Heart plays the lone Friday game on the docket when they travel to Marist (Pioneer).
