Quinnipiac Secures Fifth Straight NEC Women’s Cross Country Title 10/31/2009
Hamden, CT -- Behind five all-Conference performances, Quinnipiac won the 2009 NEC Women’s Cross Country Championship for the unprecendented fifth consecutive year. Sacred Heart junior Kimberly DeLoreto (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Hills) turned in the lone sub-18 minute time to take first-place in 17:58.1, earning NEC Outstanding Performer merit by just over 16 Quinnipiac totaled 33 points to take home the hardware, while Sacred Heart was the runner-up with a team score of 71. Monmouth accumulated 98 points, good for third place as Saint Francis (PA) (127) and Mount St. Mary’s (163) rounded out the top-five. With 168 points, Central Connecticut State sat in the sixth slot, followed by Robert Morris (176) and Bryant (203) in seventh and eighth, respectively. Long Island’s 219-point effort was good for ninth, while Fairleigh Dickinson (281), St. Francis (NY) (296) and Wagner (308) completed the 12-team field. The Bobcat contingent placed five runners among the top-11 as they were paced by the reigning NEC Freshman of the Year, Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), who crossed the line in 18:15.3 to take third place. On her heels was freshman Becca White (Natick, MA/Natick), who captured the fourth slot with a time of 18:18.3. Senior Kristen Stevens (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) surged to sixth place (18:35.8) and classmate Lindsey Pierret (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) clocked in at 18:53.1, good for ninth place. Rounding out QU’s all-leaguers was sophomore Julie Lanning (Victor, NY/Victor) in 11th with a 18:56.7 clip. The Bobcats' Carolyn Martin was selected as the NEC Coach of the Year after her first year at the helm. Monmouth and Bryant landed one harrier on the all-NEC list apiece, as Hawk senior Cailin Lynam (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) rounded out the top-five in 18:19.8 and Bulldog freshman Deirdre Doyle (Carlow, Ireland) claimed seventh with a time of 18:43.8. Long Island senior Selina Munoz (San Diego, CA) was the lone Blackbird to receive all-Conference merit with a time of 18:51.7 and eighth place, while Central Connecticut State junior Katherine Bossardet (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard) represented the Blue Devils on the all-NEC list, clocking in at 19:01.0 to take 12th place. The Saint Francis (PA) duo of sophomore Sarah Grossi (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) and senior Anna Hoffman (Enon Valley, PA/Mohawk) came in 10th and 13th, respectively, with times of 18:55.8 and 19:04.3 to earn all-league recognition. SHU’s Olivia Civardi (Brightwaters, NY/Bay Shore) ran to a 14th-place standing (19:10.2), rounding out the all-NEC performers.
