Through its partnership with Aéropostale, the Northeast Conference for the third straight season is recognizing outstanding scholar-athletes.

One Aéropostale Scholar-Athlete award winner will be chosen from each participating school during NEC-televised men's and women's basketball games throughout the 2006-07 season.

Psyche Butler • Robert Morris • Basketball

March 10, 2007

 An all-NEC first team selection in 2005-06, Butler is a key performer for the Colonials, who earned a share of the NEC regular season title past season with a 15-3 league mark.  She averages 9.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, and currently ranks ninth on the circuit with a .486 shooting percentage.  A Communications major, she has posted a 3.38 grade point average.

Drew Shubik • Sacred Heart • Basketball

 Shubik, a junior guard, helped lead Sacred Heart to a berth in the NEC title game and its first-ever winning season in Division I with an 18-14 record.  He averaged 9.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and currently ranks second in the NEC in both steals (2.0 spg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.83:1).  He also hit 40 shots from outside the arc.  Shubik's grade point average currently stands at 3.61.  He is a Sports Management major.

Ashley Huffman • Monmouth • Track & Field

The 2006-07 NEC champion in the indoor long jump, Huffman is currently tied for seventh in the nation in the event with a school record distance of  19’ 11 ½”.  She will compete in the long jump at the AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships on February 24-25 in Boston.  Huffman also ranks 17th in Division I in the heptathalon.  A senior, Huffman is an Education/English major with a 3.61 grade point average.

Kerri Burke • Sacred Heart • Basketball

Burke became Sacred Heart’s all-time leader in assists (366 as of Feb. 19) earlier this season after returning from a torn ACL knee injury suffered in early January. Twice named to the NEC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll, she has served as team captain as a junior and senior and helped lead the Pioneers to their first NEC title in 2005-06.  A Psychology major, Burke carries a 3.36 grade point average.

The freshman from Ulm, Germany was named NEC Golfer of the Week on October 25 after winning the Wagner Tri-Meet with a score of 86 in blustery conditions at the Richmond County Country Club on Staten Island.  She also finished second at the Sacred Heart Invitational one week later to close out fall play.  Mayr has compiled a 3.94 grade point average majoring in Management.

Carolyn Raveia • Monmouth • Lacrosse

A senior captain and three-year starter, Raveia was one of the driving forces on Monmouth's 2006 NEC championship team.  She scored 39 goals on the year and ranked seventh in the conference with 2.17 goals per game.  Raveia was a first team all-NEC performer in 2005 and was named to the NEC All-Tournament team after scoring six goals in two matches.  Raveia is a Commincations major with a concentration in Public Relations.  Her overall grade point average is 3.72, including a 3.86 mark within her major.

A candidate for Central Connecticut State's Male Student-Athlete of the year, Beaudet is a key reserve up front for the first place Blue Devils.  The 6'11" center is hitting nearly 60 percent of his field goal attempts this season.  Named the 2006 CCSU Sociology Student of the Year, he is also an NEC Academic Roll honoree.  Beaudet is a senior Sociology major with a 3.79 grade point average.

Jen Hirsch • Quinnipiac • Soccer

One of two NEC women’s soccer players selected to the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Division I All-New England team, she was also named a 2006 NEC first team all-star after anchoring a Quinnipiac defense that allowed the third fewest goals in the conference.  She also competed in the NEWISA Soccer Bowl at season's end.

Esteban Blanco • Fairleigh Dickinson • Tennis

Blanco has compiled a 12-4 record thus far in the 2006-07 season, including a 2-0 record against NEC opposition and an 8-2 mark in tournament play.  Last season as a freshman, he received all-NEC second team acclaim in #3 doubles along with partner Rodrigo Avila.  Blanco came to FDU as one of the top-ranked players on Argentina’s junior circuit.  The Buenos Aires native is a Finance major who maintains a 3.75 grade point average.

Francisco Tapia • St. Francis (NY) • Cross Country

Tapia was the first finisher for St. Francis (NY) and took 35th overall at the 2006 NEC Cross Country Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park with a time of 27:35.1.  A member of the Terriers' indoor and outdoor track and field teams, Tapia also serves as the Sports Editor for the school's yearbook committee.  The Mathematics major carries a 3.53 grade point average.

Lauren Popovich • Saint Francis (PA) • Soccer

A 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II First Team women's soccer honoree, Popovich finished tied for third in scoring on the Red Flash last fall with seven points, including two game-winning goals and three assists.  The junior has started all 38 matches the past two seasons. An NEC and Saint Francis Academic Honor Roll student, Popovich majors in Accounting.  Her grade point average currently stands at 3.91.

Logie was voted the 2006 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in cross country after he finished fourth at the conferencd championship meet held at Van Cortlandt Park in October.  Logie, who crossed the tape in 26:08.8, earned all-conference honors for the second year in a row. He was was the top finisher for the Mount, which finished third in the meet. The 2005 NEC Freshman of the Year went on to compete at NCAA regionals two weeks later where he finished 71st. Logie is a 3.56 grade point average student who is majoring in History.

Matt Maher • Fairleigh Dickinson • Baseball

February 5, 2007

As a freshman in 2006, Maher recorded a team-high .308 batting average in addition to driving in 13 runs for the Knights.  Batting leadoff for the majority of the year, he also scored 19 runs.  At season's end Maher was named to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association All-Rookie squad.  The Communications major currently sports a 3.94 grade point average.

Caitlin Pearson • Mount St. Mary's • Basketball

 Pearson, who began her Mount career as a walk-on and earned a scholarship for her final two seasons, played in her 75th game at the school in late January.  She has tallied a personal-best eight points three times in her career. A Biochemistry major, Pearson has compiled a 3.22 grade point average.

Marc Honore • Saint Francis (PA) • Volleyball

Honore led the Saint Francis men's volleyball program to their first-ever CSTV/AVCA national ranking this week (No. 15) and currently leads the EIVA in hitting percentage (.528) and blocks (1.75 per game), and 10th in kills (4.55 per game) and service aces (0.50 per game).  The senior middle hitter is the school’s all-time leader in kills, hitting percentage and blocks, and ranks second in aces.  A Marketing major, Honore sports a 3.21 grade point average.

 Spargo, a senior, earned first team all-NEC honors at shortstop in both 2005 and 2006.  Last season, she ranked second in the league in hits (65), third in stolen bases (13) and fourth in average (.382) as the Colonials took runner-up honors in the NEC Tournament.  In her sophomore campaign she established a school record with 72 hits.  Spargo carries a 3.69 grade point average as an Elementary Education major.

A two-time first team all-conference selection, Burbige led the Pioneers to their sixth straight NEC Tournament berth in 2006 and ranked in the NEC top-10 in goals (five) and points (11).  She was also named to the 2006 NSCAA/adidas All-East Region Third Team. Burbige finished her Sacred Heart career with 14 goals and seven assists in 77 games played/starts.  A Criminal Justice major, she sports a 3.64 grade point average.

Allison Andreano • Long Island • Soccer

Andreano was one of the driving forces behind Long Island's run to its first NEC Women's Soccer title since 1999 this past fall.  The senior finished the year ranked sixth in the conference in assists (four) and seventh in points (12).  A two-time all-NEC performer, Andreano closed out her career as the school's all-time assists leader with 18.  She is a member of the LIU Honors Program and majors in Sports Science. Her grade point average currently stands at 3.29.

Jessica McCavanagh • Central Connecticut State • Soccer

A member of three NEC Championship teams, McCavanagh was voted to the all-NEC first team for the third year in a row in 2006. She was also tabbed to the NSCAA/adidas All-Northeast region team. This past season, she tied for second in the NEC with 20 points, and also finished third in points per game (1.11) and assists (six). The 2006 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team honoree, McCavanagh majors in Psychology and carries a 3.60 grade point average.

Jeff Lamberton • Mount St. Mary's • Tennis

A two-time NEC Scholar Athlete of the Year in men's tennis, Lamberton has helped lead Mount St. Mary’s to consecutive winning seasons for just the second time since the school elevated to Division I in 1989.  He was named to the all-NEC second team at #3 singles in 2005-06, after earning first team honors at #4 singles in 2004-05.  His 16 singles wins a year ago is the eighth-best single season mark in school history, while his 13 doubles victories rank him sixth on the all-time Mount list.  Lamberton maintains a 3.80 grade point average as an Accounting major.

Ryne Nutt • Central Connecticut State • Football

Nutt was a key component on the CCSU offensive line this past season, which opened holes for Justice Hairston, who finished the year as the nation's leading rusher with 167.9 yards per game. A three-year starter, Nutt is a two-time all-NEC selection and played on NEC championship teams as a freshman and sophomore.  The junior was also selected as a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American.  Nutt majors in Accounting and carries a 3.97 grade point average.

The 2006 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in volleyball, Roosevelt finished second in the conference in kills, service aces and points.  She is a three-time NEC all-star, including first team honors this past fall when she broke single-season school records in kills (486), total attacks (1294), and digs (459).  Roosevelt went on to earn recognition as a member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Second Team.  She majors in Psychology and possesses a 3.58 grade point average

Taryn Reichard • Robert Morris • Women's Soccer

An integral component of the Robert Morris defense, Reichard has started in 53 out of 55 matches over the first three years of her career for the Colonials.  She was recently tabbed to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA District II Academic All-America Team.  The Harrisburg, PA native carries a near-perfect 3.98 grade point average majoring in Environmental Science.

An all-NEC first team selection and an NSCAA/adidas All-Northeast Region third team honoree, O'Connor helped lead Long Island to its second conference championship and NCAA College Cup appearance in 2006.  She anchored a Blackbird defense that allowed just three goals all season long in conference play.  Named to the LIU Dean's List in 2005 and NEC Academic Honor roll this past fall, O'Connor is a Marketing major with a 3.35 grade point average.

  The Wagner Scholar-Athlete of the Month for November, Roser recently established a school record in the 200 yard freestyle and currently maintains the second fastest time in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events in the NEC this season.  She was also a member of Wagner's record setting 400 and 800 yard freestyle relay teams last year.  A multiple member of the NEC Academic Honor Roll, Roser majors in Biology and sports a 3.77 grade point average.

In his senior campaign, Sultzer was Wagner's top finisher and earned all-conference recognition after finishing seventh at the 2006 NEC Cross Country Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park.  He wrapped the year as the Seahawks' top finisher in five-of-seven races.  A seven-time member of the NEC Academic Honor Roll, Sultzer maintains a 3.50 grade point average as a Business Administration major.

Katja Bavendam • St. Francis (NY) • Basketball

A 6'7 center on the St. Francis (NY) women's basketball team, Bavendam currently leads the NEC and stands 13th in the nation with 3.0 blocked shots per game.  She also ranks in the NEC top-10 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage.  Bavendam has qualified for the Dean’s List every semester since her enrollment and attends St. Francis on a Presidential Scholarship.  She is an Information Technology major with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

 A member of the St. Francis (NY) women's cross country team, Zita finished second among Terrier harriers and 49th overall at the 2006 NEC Championship meet held at Van Cortlandt Park.  She crossed the tape in 21:12.3.  With a double major of Adolescent Education and English, she carries a 3.74 grade point average.

Martina Wagner • Long Island • Volleyball

 Wagner was voted the 2006 NEC Women's Volleyball Player of the Year as she led Long Island to its third straight conference championship.  She ranked first in the league with 4.9 kills per game, 0.94 service aces per game and 6.12 points per game.  A two-time first team all-NEC pick, Wagner also excelled off the court with her selection to the NEC Fall Academic Honor Roll and was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District honoree.  She is a Marketing major who sports a 3.72 grade point average.

Gensler, a senior who was recently named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America First Team, tied the Robert Morris single-season mark and led the NEC with 11 sacks in 2006.  The first team all-NEC defensive lineman also paced the league with 17.5 tackles for negative yardage.  He closed out his career with a school record with 19 sacks.  A Manufacturing Engineer major, Gensler carries a 3.91 grade point average.

An ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American District I Second Team selection, Emnott guided the Seahawks to their first NEC Tournament berth since 2001 this past season.  She led the Seahawks and ranked fifth in the NEC in assists (6.52 apg), and finished with four double-doubles this year.  The senior also wrapped her career second all-time at Wagner with 2,672 assists and posted three of the top-10 single-season assist totals in school history.  Emnott, who majors in Chemistry, has compiled a 3.85 grade point average.
