Light grounded the Blackbirds to earn his fifth NEC win in six starts on Friday in Downtown Brooklyn. Showing his ability to dominate opposing hitters, the 6-foot-6 right-handed pro prospect struck out a career-high 15 batters and walked no one during 8.0 innings of Monmouth’s series-opening victory over LIU Brooklyn. Light fanned six of the seven hitters he faced in Game 1 of the four-game set en-route to setting Monmouth’s single-game record for strikeouts. The Garden State product, who has allowed only eight earned runs over six league appearances, held LIU to one run on five hits. Light, who retired the side in order during four of his eight innings of work, saw his day end when LIU catcher Tyler Jones, the 2011 NEC batting champion, led off the ninth inning with a double. Monmouth’s No. 1 starter left the game with a 6-0 lead and watched the bullpen hold off the Blackbirds’ furious ninth-inning rally to hang on for a 6-5 win. It was Light’s fourth double-digit strikeout game this season.
