Baseball NEC Rookie of the Week

Kevin McAvoy, Bryant
Syracuse, NY / Westhill
RHP
Freshman
6-2
180

McAvoy took the ball for Bryant’s series finale against Fairleigh Dickinson and pitched the Bulldogs to a split of the four-game set.  Allowing Bryant to remain 1.0 game ahead of Monmouth for the lead in the NEC standings, the rookie right-hander limited third-place FDU to one run and five hits over a career-high 8.0 innings of winning baseball. McAvoy, who was throwing a three-hit shutout through 7.0 innings of the eventual 5-1 victory, surrendered FDU’s lone run on a HBP and two singles in the eighth inning, but was able to finish the frame by evoking a double-play ball off the bat of FDU first baseman Eric Anderson.  The 6-foot-2 freshman fanned four batters, including two during the sixth inning with runners in scoring position, and walked two. He is now 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA in six league starts.

Vincent Guglietti, Quinnipiac
East Haven, CT / East Haven
DH
Freshman
6-5
200

Guglietti led the circuit in batting average last week.  Quinnipiac’s freshman designated hitter went 9-for-16 (.563) over a five-game span comprised of a mid-week contest with UConn followed by a weekend NEC series with Sacred Heart. The left-handed swinging slugger had at least one base-knock in all five games.  He also scored three runs and drove in another three. Guglietti played an important role in stopping the Bobcats’ 10-game slide in Sunday’s series finale at rival Sacred Heart.  The 6-foot-5 freshman went 4-for-5 with two runs and a RBI in a 9-8 victory that saw QU score all its runs over the final three innings.  Guglietti stroked singles in the seventh and eighth frames before delivering a run-scoring three-bagger in the ninth.
