Women's Basketball Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week
|
Katie Whittington, Bryant
Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg
G
Senior
5-4
The small senior guard, who stands only 5’4” tall, played big when Bryant needed her the most. After the Bulldogs dropped a 58-50 decision to second-place Sacred Heart in last Wednesday’s make-up contest, they had no more margin for error if they had hoped to steal the final spot in the upcoming NEC Tournament. With Bryant’s back against the wall, Whittington stepped up and produced back-to-back 20-plus point performances. Helping the Bulldogs to a weekend sweep of the NEC’s Keystone State contingent and their first-ever Division I postseason berth, the veteran guard averaged 22.5 points, 6.0 assists and 1.5steals per contest. She poured in a career-high 24 points, to go along with six assists and a pair of steals, as the Bulldogs ran past Saint Francis U, 79-54. Two nights later, with Bryant facing a win-and-in situation, Whittington played all 45 minutes of an overtime battle with Robert Morris. She scored 21 points, none more important than her final two. With Bryant trailing, 56-55, in the waning seconds of overtime, Whittington beat the shot clock and sank the game-winning jumper with 00:13 remaining.

Senior
5-8
Babe’s sensational shooting and premium play helped Central Connecticut lock up the No. 5 seed in the upcoming NEC Tournament. Spearheading Central’s winning effort against Robert Morris and Saint Francis U, the dynamic 5-foot-8 guard averaged 23.5 points, 4.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per outing. She made 17 of 27 (.630) field goal attempts and shot 80 percent from the free throw line over the final weekend of the NEC regular season schedule. With CCSU needing a win to clinch a return to the postseason following last year’s absence, Babe provided 18 points, on 56 percent shooting, and eight assists to steer the Blue Devils past Robert Morris on Saturday. The Pennsylvania product’s shooting was even sharper in Monday night’s regular season finale against Saint Francis. Babe made 8 of 11 shots from the field and connected on 12 of 14 attempts from the charity stripe in the 76-71 triumph over the Red Flash. The 29 points she scored stand as her third-highest single-game total of the season.
