NEC Men's Basketball Release (12/21)
12/21/2009
LIU's Jaytornah Wisseh &
SFPA's Umar Shannon
In claiming his second Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week award of the season, Long Island senior guard Jaytornah Wisseh finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in a terrific all-around effort against Manhattan on Saturday. He scored six points in a 10-0 LIU run midway through the second half to cut the Jaspers lead to eight points, then converted and an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:12 to play to keep the Blackbirds within striking distance. It was the fifth 20+ point effort for Wisseh on the season. Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week honors go to Saint Francis (PA) freshman guard Umar Shannon, who averaged a team-best 15.0 points in two outings last week. In the two games, Shannon shot 50.0 percent from the field and hit 4-5 shots from three-point range. He tallied a team-high 16 points, including a perfect 3-3 from long range, and added four rebounds in a Sunday setback to preseason MAC favorite Akron.
