Emmitsburg, MD -- Mount St. Mary’s was crowned the first-ever Northeast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Champion under sunny skies at the Mountaineers’ home turf at Waldron Family Stadium.  The Mount defeated Quinnipiac 14-9, using a four-goal spurt  to widen its lead as the clock dwindled down through the final eight minutes of regulation.

Mount St. Mary’s attacker Andrew Scalley (Arnold, MD/Archbishop Spalding) and brothers Bryant (Great Mills, MD/St. Mary’s Ryken) and Brett Schmidt (Great Mills, MD/St. Mary’s Ryken) combined for nine of the Mount’s 14 total points.  With eight minutes and a half minutes left on the clock, the Bobcats fought back to close the deficit to one-point, 10-9, on the heels of a goal by Christian Haggerty (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South).  The point sent Mount St. Mary’s into a four-goal offensive frenzy as Scalley blasted his fifth of the game followed up by Daniel Stranix’s (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) decisive point.  Bryant Schmidt made the uphill climb even steeper for the Bobcats by finishing off back-to-back tallies to tip the scales in favor of the Mountaineers 14-9 with only a minute to play.

While the Mount’s offense got the job done, tournament MVP T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie, MD/Archbishop Spalding) did more than his fair share of work between the pipes.  DiBartolo registered 14 total saves to Quinnipiac keeper Kevin Benzing’s (Severna Park, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) 11.  The lion’s share of DiBartolo’s saves came in the all-important fourth quarter when he stopped six balls and endured a battery of Bobcat shots as Quinnipiac outshot Mount St. Mary’s 17-9 in the final frame.

The first and second quarters were marked by back-and-fourth play as they consisted of runs by both teams.  After the Mount went up 2-0 on opening goals by Bryant Schmidt and Anthony Golden (Timonium, MD/Loyola Bakerfield), Quinnipiac responded with a five-goal streak over the remaining five minutes, interrupted only by Mountaineer Brett Schmidt (Great Mills, MD/St. Mary’s Ryken), who blasted his first of the game.  Bobcat Haggerty had back-to-back tallies, and teammate Kevin Kelly (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) closed the off first frame with a goal on a Haggerty pass to push Quinnipiac ahead 4-3.

In the second quarter, Mount St Mary’s came to life.  Determined not to let Quinnipiac race too far ahead, Andrew Scalley (Arnold, MD/Archbishop Spalding) scored three of his eventual game-high five goals throughout a four-goal Mountaineer spurt that spanned three minutes.  Scalley’s goals were sandwiched in between successful shots by Schmidt. The duo gave the Mount an 8-6 advantage and a lead they would never relinquish over the next two 15-minute quarters.

Both Schmidt brothers ended the day with three goals apiece, while Brett connected for three assists.  Quinnipiac’s Haggerty and Kelly also notched a trio of goals, while Basil Kostaras (Southlake, TX/Episcopal School of Dallas) pulled in two.
