Northeast Conference Track & Field Release (2/7)

LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds took three of the six honors bestowed in the season’s final installment of the Northeast Conference’s weekly track & field awards program. With the 2012 NEC Indoor Championship set for this weekend (Feb. 11-12), a number of athletes spent this past week tuning up. In her final appearance heading into the conference title meet, LIU senior Jessie Gaines reached a new level in the triple jump on the way to the NEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week award. Her freshman teammate Shakia Williams, who hails from the same Virginia town, took the women’s rookie award for her 200-meter performance at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Central Connecticut half-miler Alasia Griebel rounded out the women’s honors, securing the track accolade for the program record she set at Yale. LIU senior sprinter Nickolei Mahlung headlines the men’s side after recording the 28th-fastest 60-meter time in the nation.
