Northeast Conference Baseball Release (3/12)
Wagner RHP Ryan Van Spronsen
Monmouth continued its early-season monopoly of the NEC Baseball Player of the Week award. Instead of Jamie Rosenkranz, it was third baseman Danny Avella
bringing the honor back home to the Jersey Shore this week. Avella posted a .533 on-base percentage during Monmouth’s series victory over Sun Belt Conference preseason favorite Troy. The NEC Player of the Week blasted two homers in the triumphant rubber match. The NEC Pitcher of the Week award wound up on the other side of the NEC’s Outer Bridge rivalry. Wagner righty Ryan Van Spronsen
struck out nine in a nine-inning complete-game victory over Atlantic Sun member Jacksonville, a top-40 club according to Collegiate Baseball News’ preseason rankings. The Canadian-born Van Spronsen
scattered five hits, only one of the extra-base variety, in a 4-1 win over a team that earned an NCAA At-Large selection in 2011. A pitcher and an outfielder shared the NEC Rookie of the Week award. Mount St. Mary’s freshman Ryan Owens
put for back-to-back multi-hit efforts against CAA members George Mason and James Madison. He scored two runs, including the game-winner, in a win over the top finisher in the CAA’s preseason coaches’ poll. Meanwhile, southpaw Cody Brown
carried Central Connecticut to a victory. Winning for the second time in two collegiate starts, the rookie lefty tossed a complete-game shutout of Saint Joseph’s.
