Women’s Championship (not before 12:30 pm)
#1 Fairleigh Dickinson vs. #2 Quinnipiac

West Windsor, NJ -- Top-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson survived a pair of semifinal tests under sunny skies on Saturday afternoon and will compete Sunday for the men’s and women’s titles at the 2012 NEC Tennis Championships. The men’s final will pit FDU against #3 Monmouth at 10:00 am, followed by the FDU women taking on #2 Quinnipiac. The tournament for the 12th straight year is being held at the Mercer County Outdoor Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ. The winners of both the men’s and women’s tournaments will receive the NEC’s automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.

The Fairleigh Dickinson men will be looking to add to their league record 10 NEC Tournament titles when the Knights take the court with Monmouth on Sunday. The two Garden State rivals met just ten days ago with the Hawks picking up a 6-1 victory in West Long Branch. FDU and MU last met with the NEC title at stake in 2007. That day, the Knights beat their Jersey counterparts, 4-0, their first NEC crown since 1999.

After winning the doubles point on Saturday, the Knights picked up three straight set wins in their semifinal outing with #4 Mount St. Mary’s. FDU freshman Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Centre Language School) - a five-time NEC Rookie of the Week - picked up his second win of the tourney and improved to 14-4 in #1 singles play this season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Mount’s Matthew Blake (Garnet Valley, PA/Salesianum (DE)). In the second semi, Monmouth dropped the doubles point to #2 seed Quiinnipiac, but battled back in singles behind the play of freshman Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta, NJ/Sparta), a 6-4, 6-1 winner over QU’s Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) in a #1 flight match.

FDU now has an opportunity to win its first NEC women’s title since 1988 when it takes on longtime women’s power, defending champion and #2 seed Quinnipiac. The two teams squared off back on

The Knights faced a stiff challenge from #4 LIU Brooklyn on Saturday, winning 4-1 in a match that was closer than the final score would indicate. After the Blackbirds took the doubles point, FDU won the first set via tiebreaker in three different singles matches to take control. At the #2 flight, senior Elmine Botes (Heidelberg Gauteng, Rep. of South Africa/Hoer Volkskool and British International Distance College) won, 7-6 (3), 6-0 over LIU’s Taysha Blessington (Sydney, Australia/Roseville College). Quinnipiac took care of local rival and #4 seed Sacred Heart, 4-0, and will now play for their seventh NEC crown in the last nine years. Freshman Michelle Daasa (Malboro, NJ/Marlboro), a local Jersey product, was dominant in a 6-0, 6-0 win at #4 singles for QU.

In women’s consolation flight play, #5 Mount St. Mary’s beat #8 Monmouth, 5-0, and #7 Saint Francis (PA) downed #6 Robert Morris, 4-2. The Mountaineers and Red Flash finished the tournament tied for fifth place, while the Hawks and Colonials shared seventh place.

On the men’s side, #5 Sacred Heart and #6 Saint Francis (PA) tied for fifth place. The Pioneers ousted #8 St. Francis (NY), 4-0, while the Red Flash stopped #7 Robert Morris, 4-1. The Terriers and Colonials ended the tourney tied for seventh place.
