West Windsor, NJ -- It was a great day to be a Knight. Under the leadership of veteran head coach Ira Miller, Fairleigh Dickinson claimed both the men’s and women’s titles at the 2012 Northeast Conference Tennis Championships on Sunday. The Knights, who were the top seed in both divisions, first won the men’s crown with a 4-0 win over #3 Monmouth, then held off #2 Quinnipiac, 4-2, to capture the women’s title.

The tournament for the 12th straight year was held at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ. With widespread rain up and down the east coast, play was moved to Mercer’s indoor facility adjacent to the outdoor courts.

The top-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson men lived up to their billing with a dominant performance against the third-seeded Hawks. In doing so, the Knights won their record 11th NEC crown, including the seventh under the leadership of Ira Miller and first since 2008.

FDU took the early lead by capturing the doubles point. The Knights would go on to receive a pair of stellar efforts from their top two singles players. Five-time NEC Rookie of the Week Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Centre Language School) lifted his record to 15-4 at the #1 flight and clinched the team victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win over MU’s Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta, NJ/Sparta). Joining the freshman in the win column was junior teammate and #2 flight player Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House), himself a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Francis Jedlinski (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Township). Also coming out on top for the Knights was senior Dominic Hemy (Suffolk, Eng;land/Ipswich School), who stopped the Hawks’ Jason Rothstein (Pine Brook, NJ), 6-1, 6-1.

The women’s match had all the makings of a classic. Quinnipiac, the defending champion, was playing in its 12th NEC final in 13 years and looking for its seventh title in nine years under Mike Quitko. FDU had been the NEC runner-up in each of the last two seasons and was in the hunt for its third championship and first since 1988.

FDU had little trouble taking the doubles point, but Quinnipiac came out firing on all cylinders in singles play. QU junior Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, NY/John F. Kennedy Catholic) won at #3 singles, 6-1, 6-1, but FDU answered right back at the #1 flight as junior Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239) posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory. The Knights took a 3-1 edge when junior Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) battled back from a set down to top QU’s Ariana Launie (Milton, MA/Milton), 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, in #5 flight play. The Bobcats trimmed the lead moments later to 3-2 on the strength of sophomore Lavinia Cristescu’s (West Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford) 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 triumph at #6 singles over FDU’s Manuele Leme (Varginha, Brazil/E.E. Antania Alves Cruz). While FDU senior Elmine Botes (Heidelberg Gauteng, Rep. of South Africa/Hoer Volkskool and British International Distance College) and QU freshman Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, NY/Garden City) were engaged in a terrific three-set battle at #2 singles, FDU clinched the title at #4 as senior Irina Dementyeva (Moscow, Russia/W 91) rallied to beat freshman Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro), 0-6, 6-2, 6-3, and the celebration began.

The winners of both the men’s and women’s tournaments will now receive the NEC’s automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament. The selection special for both men and women will air live on NCAA.com on Tuesday, May 1 beginning at 5:00 pm. First round NCAA play begins May 11th.
