Tempe, AZ -- The LIU Brooklyn softball team saw its 2012 season come to a close on Saturday evening, as the Blackbirds dropped a heartbreaking 5-4, nine-inning decision to Long Beach State in an NCAA Tournament elimination game. LIU battled back from an early deficit to take a one-run lead into the sixth but the 49ers knotted the contest in the bottom of the frame and scored the game-winner three innings later.

Freshman Paris Shipp went 2-for-4 with a triple, home run and three RBIs for the Blackbirds, who advanced to the ninth NCAA Tournament in program history this season. Junior Megan Sheaf went 2-for-3 at the plate and put forth a gritty effort in the circle, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs.
