Brooklyn Heights, NY -- The St. Francis College men's soccer team released its schedule for the upcoming 2012 season, announced by Head Coach Tom Giovatto on Tuesday.
Last season, St. Francis missed out on postseason play despite finishing with a 10-5-3 record and a 5-3-2 conference mark. St. Francis has posted three double-digit win totals in Giovatto's first five years at the helm.
“We are excited for the 2012 season,” Giovatto said. “We feel that we put together a challenging schedule that we hope will prepare us for conference play.”
Twelve of the Terriers' eighteen opponents in 2012 had RPI's in the top 150 in 2011, with two of those teams advancing to the NCAA Tournament within the past two years (UConn and Monmouth).
The Terriers will open their schedule with five road contests. The season kicks off on Saturday, August 25th (7:00 pm) in Storrs, Connecticut against UConn, who advanced to the NCAA Final Four last season. St. Francis will then travel to Hempstead, Long Island to battle Hofstra on Aug. 30 at 7:00 pm.
To open the month of September, the Terriers will invade the “City of Brotherly Love” as they travel to Philadelphia, PA, to tangle with the Saint Joseph's Hawks at 7:00 pm (Sept. 1). After six days off, the team heads to Fairfax, Virginia as they take on American University (Sept. 7th) and George Mason University (Sept. 9th) in the George Mason Invitational.
In the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 15th (Alumni Day), the Terriers will host Howard University at the Aviator Sports Complex at 4:00 pm before hitting the road again on Sept. 17 to take on Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey at 4:00 pm.
A three-game homestand concludes the month of September as St. Francis wraps up its non-conference slate against intra-state rival Manhattan on Sept. 21 at 7:00 pm. Northeast Conference play will commence on September 28th, as the Terriers host the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers at 7:00 pm followed by the Quinnipiac University Bobcats on Sept. 30 at 3:00 pm.
The first week of October has the Terriers heading to Western Pennsylvania, as they tangle with the Robert Morris University Colonials on October 5th in Moon Township (3:00 pm kick-off) and conclude the trip against their Pennsylvania counter-parts, the Saint Francis University Red Flash on Oct. 7th at 3:00 pm.
The Terriers will have four days to prepare as they welcome the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils to Aviator on Friday, October 12th for a 7:00 pm kick-off. On Oct. 19th, St. Francis makes the short trip down Fulton Street to tangle with the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds at 6:30 pm.
To conclude the month of October, two of the next three games will be played at the Aviator Complex. On Oct. 21st, Bryant University pays a visit to Brooklyn while the defending Northeast Conference champion, Monmouth University, concludes the home slate on Oct. 26th at 7:00 pm.
The final two games of the season have St. Francis on the road, as they first travel to Fairfield, Connecticut to square off against the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Oct. 28th at 1:00 pm and conclude the 2012 regular season in Teaneck, New Jersey against the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights on November 2nd at 7:00 pm.
The 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament will once again be contested at the home site of the top seed. Semifinal matches are scheduled for November 9th before the November 11th championship game.
