West Long Branch, NJ -- Carli Figlio, entering her sixth year at the helm of the Monmouth University field hockey program, has announced the addition of Sarah Blythe-Wood to her coaching staff for the upcoming 2012 season. Blythe-Wood, a four-year standout at Richmond, arrives in West Long Branch after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Virginia Commonwealth.
"We are so excited about adding Sarah to our staff," commented Figlio. "She brings a great competitive spirit along with a wealth of international knowledge. As one of the best attackers to come out of Richmond, Sarah will bring her expertise to our forward line."
The Zimbabwe native stamped her name in the Richmond records books from 2006 to 2009. With 91 career points to her credit on 36 goals and 19 assists, Blythe-Wood ranks sixth all-time in points and seventh all-time in goals. Blythe-Wood, who earned All-Atlantic 10 honors three of her four years at Richmond, was tabbed to the 2008 and 2009 all-tournament team, while being named the 2009 A-10 Tournament MVP, guiding her squad to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in her career.
Her senior season proved to be her best in a Spider uniform as she collected 55 points, finding the back of the cage 22 times, both ranking third in Richmond history. The 2009 A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, who became the Spider's fifth All-American recipient, was also added to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-South First Team. A participant in the North/South All-Star game, Blythe-Wood, who graduated with a degree in international studies with a focus on world politics and diplomacy, was also added to the academic all-conference squad in 2009.
Monmouth opens up the 2012 campaign as it welcomes Syracuse to So Sweet A Cat Field on August 24th for a 1 p.m. start.
