Hackensack, NJ -- Fairleigh Dickinson University men’s basketball Head Coach Greg Vetrone announced today the addition of New Jersey’s Sekou Harris to the incoming class for 2012.
Harris, a 5’11, 165 pound point guard from Plainfield, NJ, averaged 14.5 points per game and 4.5 assists per game, while guiding Plainfield High School to an overall record of 30-4 during the 2011-12 season, which included an appearance in the Tournament of Champions Championships game.
“Sekou has shown great leadership through his career and has an uncanny ability to play the point guard position,” said Vetrone. “He will be a great addition to our program.”
“Sekou comes from a very well regarded high school program and has played against some of the best competition in the nation through his AAU team (NJ Playaz),” added Vetrone. “We are very excited to have a New Jersey player of this caliber and ability become part of our program.”
With Harris at the helm, Plainfield won four-consecutive State Sectional Championships and two straight Group Three State titles. The Cardinals appeared in the Tournament of Champions final for the second-consecutive year, this year falling to perennial powerhouse, St. Anthony’s. Harris averaged 19 points in his final three games with Plainfield, including the Tournament of Champions final.
Harris earned First Team All-County, First Team All-Central Jersey and Second Team All-State honors as selected by The Star Ledger at the conclusion of his senior year. He ranks seventh among all-time Plainfield basketball players with 1,090 points.
“Sekou is the perfect combination guard,” said Harris’ high school coach, Jeff Lubreski. “He is a scoring point guard who is also capable of making the players around him better."
Harris chose FDU over Delaware, Florida Atlantic, Florida International University, Marshall and Quinnipiac.
With the addition of Harris, the Knights’ have five newcomers for the 2012-13 season including Xavier Harris, Myles Mann, Kyle Pearson and Sidney Sanders, Jr..
The Knights open the 2012-12 season at Xavier on Friday, November 9 before hosting Stony Brook on Thursday, November 15.
