The Hawks used a nifty corner kick goal by NEC Co-Player of the Week Ryan Clark (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township) to down Columbia, 1-0, and move to 4-0-1 on the season, while the Pioneers overcame an early 1-0 deficit with back-to-back strikes, including one by reigning NEC Player of the Year Marcello Castro (Parana, Brazil/Centro Universitario Maringa), to beat Holy Cross, 2-1, for their third win of 2012 (3-0). Talking about winning streaks, Fairleigh Dickinson matched the Pioneers’ feat thanks to a 4-0 rout of Albany that saw Jan Aubert (Sandvika, Norway/Donski) tickle the twine for his first collegiate goal, an effort that earned him NEC Rookie of the Week honors. The Knights are now 3-0 since dropping their season-opener to Stony Brook two weeks ago. Getting their first Ws of 2012, the Robert Morris Colonials and LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds pitched a pair of 1-0 shutouts this past week to break into the win column. Behind 10 saves from Co-NEC Player of the Week Toba Bolaji (Vaughn, Ontario/Maple) and an early tally by Daniel Calabretta (Brampton, Ontario/St. Marguerite d'Youville), RMU downed preseason Horizon League favorite Wright State. Up in Brooklyn, Jakeem Johnson (Montclair, NJ/Upper Montclair) made New Jersey’s own Rider pay on a penalty kick in the 59th minute.
