The Hawks accounted for the highest single-meet point total in conference championship history, easily wrapping their talons around a fifth consecutive team title. Monmouth scored 218 points, topping the record the Hawks set in 2010 when they became the first team in the history of the championship meet to reach the 200-point plateau (201). Twenty four of the Hawks’ points came courtesy of NEC MVP Rachel Watkins. The senior won the 100m hurdles, took silver in the 400m hurdles and placed third in Saturday’s high jump competition. Monmouth thrower Rachel Aliotta, who picked up a pair of silver medals with ECAC Championship qualifying marks in the shot put and hammer, earned the NEC Most Outstanding Field Performer award. The other two major individual honors went to members of the runner-up Saint Francis Red Flash. Junior sprinter Brittany Johnson earned the NEC Most Outstanding Track Performer award following a golden 100-200 double. She also anchored the winning 4x100m relay team. Johnson ran the fastest 100m time in the history of the conference championship meet, clicking in at 11.84 to edge the 11.86 that LIU Brooklyn’s Jessie Gaines logged in 2010. Saint Francis freshman sprinter Paris Cotman was billed the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer after running second in the 200m dash and winning the 400m. In all, seven women’s records fell over the course of the two-day championship meet that unfolded on Monmouth’s West Long Branch, NJ campus. After setting the meet record with her win in the 10K on Saturday morning, Sacred Heart’s Alyssa Selmquist came back on Sunday to complete the distance double by taking first in the 5,000m run. Selmquist’s teammate surpassed the meet record in the steeple chase. SHU sophomore Brianna Castrogivanni, who won the 3K and 5K race at the NEC Indoor Championships, clocked in at 10:35.47 to top the mark Quinnipiac’s Morgan Roche put up in 2012.
