New Britain, CT — The Central Connecticut Men’s Cross Country team joined esteemed company Saturday at the 2014 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship. Only six NEC sports programs have tallied six-straight championships in the conference’s 33 year history, and the Blue Devils become the first men’s cross country program to accomplish the feat.

In heavy rain, five Blue Devils swept the competition and claimed the top five spots. The one-through-five finish scored a perfect 15 points, tying the NEC record. The score tied the former low score of 15 set in 1991 by Fairleigh Dickinson.

Senior Patrick Hubbell earned the individual title, making him the fifth Blue Devil in five years to receive the honor. Hubbell ran the 8K course in a time of 25:22.58.

Following close behind were teammates Matt Walker, Tyler Raymond, Ryan Hertzog and Colin Sauter. Sauter was the first freshman to cross the threshold, and earned Freshman of the Year honors with a time of 25:57.39. All five CCSU runners cleared the 26 minute mark. The Blue Devils placed all six runners entered in the top-10. Thomas Lupoli earned All-NEC honors for his tenth place finish. The team averaged 25:42.85, a full minute ahead of second place Saint Francis U.

The Red Flash turned in a score of 71 points, while Bryant finished third with 78 points. Wagner was fourth (122), followed by Mount St. Mary’s (127) and Sacred Heart (153). St. Francis Brooklyn and Fairleigh Dickinson rounded out the eight team field.

Jacob Malakoff the top finisher outside of the Blue Devils. The senior crossed the finish line in 26:03.81. Joining Malakoff on the All-NEC team was James Naglieri with a 12th place finish.

Saint Francis U landed three on the All-Conference team. Ryan Kennedy, Bryce England and Christopher Fischer represented the Red Flash.
