The two-time NEC Player of the Year is finally a champion.

Playing in the NEC Women’s Basketball Championship Game for the first time in her career, senior forward Artemis Spanou totaled 30 points, 20 rebounds and six assists to spearhead Robert Morris’ 78-64 victory over Saint Francis U.

In addition to sealing her fate as the 2014 NEC Tournament MVP, Spanou’s performance helped the Colonials capture their first NCAA berth since 2008.

Robert Morris will find out its NCAA First Round destination during ESPN’s Selection Show on Monday, March 17 at 7:00 pm.

In winning their fifth conference crown, Robert Morris stifled Saint Francis’ bid for a 12th NEC Tournament title.

Playing the final NEC game of her illustrious career, SFU senior Alli Williams tallied 21 points and 13 rebounds. Williams, a two-time Capital One Academic All-American, joined Spanou on the NEC All-Tournament Team.

Williams had two points and an assist early as Saint Francis opened the game on a 9-2, but RMU came roaring back.

The Colonials took a 17-16 advantage on a Spanou jumped with 7:59 remaining in the first half and held a lead for the remainder of the game.

Robert Morris closed the opening stanza on a 19-2 run and held a 32-18 edge heading into the locker room.

In addition to Spanou and Williams, RMU guard Anna Niki Stamolamprou and SFUguard Alexa Hayward were the only other players to score in double figures. Stamolamprou finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while Hayward scored 13 points to go along with five assists. Both women earned spots on the five-member NEC All-Tournament Team.

The lone All-Tournament Team selection not in the Championship Game was Bryant senior forward Naana Ankoma Mensa. The Canadian-born forward averaged 12.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game while shooting better than 70 percent from the field over the Bulldogs’ two postseason contests. Helping Bryant to its first-ever playoff win at the Division I level, Ankoma-Mensa tallied 12 points and 14 boards in a quarterfinal victory over St. Francis Brooklyn.
