Staten Island, NY -- On the morning of Sunday, April 6, members of the Wagner College football team were among a group of volunteers who took part in an initiative to help replenish Crescent Beach, one of the many eastern shore communities devastated by Superstorm Sandy in October, 2012.
Fifteen of the approximate 90 volunteers who took part in this community service project spent several hours planting more than 2,000 Ammophila Breviligulata plants. Better known as beachgrass, this plant serves to bind the sand down as it grows and spreads, strengthening and protecting the dune.
"We were proud to be a part of an effort like this," said Seahawk long-snapper
Phil Faccone, who will enter his senior year this fall after earning Third-Team All-America honors by the
Sports Network. "It's a good feeling to be among a group of guys who, in addition to being great teammates, take an interest in the community like this. They did a fantastic job."
