Coraopolis, PA - Central Connecticut used its distance department to distance itself from the rest of the 10-team field at the 2014 NEC Outdoor Men’s Track & Field Championships.

The Blue Devils totaled 145 points, 30 of which came in the 5,000m run, to secure their first-ever outdoor team title. LIU Brooklyn, the 2014 NEC Indoor champion, scored 117 points to take second place. Meet host Robert Morris was third with a team score of 108.

Brian Biekert and Craig Hunt won two distance events apiece to power CCSU to the top of the team standings. The former struck gold in the 800m and 1500m runs. Meanwhile, Hunt, won the 5K and the 10K with teammate Matt Walker finishing second to him in both races.

It was a sprint victory, however, that catapulted CCSU into the driver’s seat in the race for the team trophy. Jamal Fruster unleashed a huge personal record to take gold in the 400m dash. It’s his second NEC gold of the year as he finished in a dead heat at the league’s indoor meet back in February.

The Most Valuable Performer Award went to sprinter Brendon Rodney from runner-up LIU Brooklyn. The Canadian-born Blackbird is heading home with four gold medals along with meet records in the 100m and 200m dashes. Having recorded a 10.29 in the 100m and a 20.41 in the 200m, Rodney’s outdoor season is far from over.

Just as he did at the indoor meet, Rodney also secured the Most Outstanding Track Performer award.

Marc Troiani was a driving force behind Sacred Heart’s 102-point showing over the weekend. On his way to earning the Most Outstanding Field Performer award, Troiani won the shot put and the discus while scoring in the hammer.

LIU Brooklyn took home another major honor when Adam Walker-Khan won the Most Outstanding Rookie award. The British-born jumper won the long jump, took second in the triple and scored a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles. He registered IC4A Championship qualifying marks in all three events.

Walker-Khan edged out Mount St. Mary’s Julian Woods for the rookie honor. Woods won both the 110m and 400m hurdles.
