Coraopolis, PA - There hadn't been a tighter race for the team title in the history of the championship meet.

When the 4x400 relay ended, only three points separated first place from third place.

It was LIU Brooklyn's victory in that final race which secured the team title for the Blackbirds by a razor-thin 2.5-point margin. While LIU totaled 134.5 points, runner-up Sacred Heart scored 132 and third-place Robert Morris tallied 131.5.

Katrina Anderson's victories in the 800m and 1500m races proved vital for the Blackbirds' title hopes. Shanice Grant was also a key contributor to the team win with a runner-up finish in the 100m hurdles and third-place showings in both the 100m and 200m dashes.

Anderson and Grant also contributed to relay wins for LIU. Posting ECAC Championship qualifying times in both events, the Blackbirds ran to victory in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Grant ran the anchor leg of the 4x100m race while Anderson was the opener for the 4x400m team.

Kyaira Wright-Harmon did not match her championship meet record, but the third-year Blackbird scored 10 points for her team by successfully defending her long jump title on Saturday.

The Blackbirds carried the team trophy along with plenty of gold back to Brooklyn, but none of the major individual awards, which are determined by point system, went to LIU.

Saint Francis U sprinter Brittany Johnson earned Most Valuable Performer (MVP) honors along with the Most Outstanding Track Performer award. Living up to her team’s nickname, the Red Flash senior ran to victories in the 100m and 200m dashes in record time.

Johnson owned the 100m meet record coming into the weekend. She proceeded to better that time in both the preliminary and final rounds. During Sunday’s 200m final, she clocked in at 23.42 to obliterate the former mark set by LIU’s Jazmin Waller in 2012.

In addition to Johnson’s work in the short sprints, one other meet record fell on Sunday. Wagner sophomore Samantha Jensen won the 100m hurdles in 13.71, besting the mark LIU’s Jessie Gaines posted in 2012 (13.77).

Meet host Robert Morris piled up quite a few points in the field while nearly stealing the team trophy.

RMU senior thrower Rachel Kotula posted second-place finishes in the javelin and shot put along with a third-place showing in the discus. She surpassed the ECAC Championship qualifying standard in all three events.

In addition to scoring 22 points for her team, Kotula picked up the NEC Most Outstanding Field Performer award.

Robert Morris scored victories in both horizontal jumps. On Saturday, Dutch-born Tara Van Schie pulled out a win in the long jump despite being seeded seventh going into the event. One day later, Russian-born Colonial Yulia Vasilyeva produced a huge seasonal best 12.16m leap to strike gold in the triple jump.

Saint Francis U’s Emma O’Hara was the lone freshman to win a gold medal at the championship meet, winning the hammer throw with an ECAC Championship-caliber mark. The British-born thrower earned the Most Outstanding Rookie award for the effort.

Sacred Heart’s Brianna Castrogivanni, a two-time NEC Indoor MVP, posted a double win. Contributing 20 points to the Pioneers' third-place total, the senior eased to victory in the 3,000m steeple chase and 5,000m run.
