The Northeast Conference (NEC) announced its spring Team Sportsmanship Award honorees this morning with LIU Brooklyn and Robert Morris earning two apiece.
LIU claimed the men’s golf and women’s tennis awards, while the Colonials were honored in women’s golf and men’s outdoor track and field. Also recognized were Central Connecticut (baseball), Mount St. Mary’s (women’s lacrosse), Sacred Heart (women’s outdoor track and field), Saint Joseph’s (men’s lacrosse), Saint Francis U (men’s tennis) and Wagner (softball).
Robert Morris and Sacred Heart concluded the 2013-14 academic year with a league-high four sportsmanship awards, followed by LIU Brooklyn with three honors.
Since the NEC Team Sportsmanship program was instituted in 2008-09, Saint Francis U has won a conference-best 29 awards. The Red Flash led the NEC in team sportsmanship honors each year from 2008-13.
The award program, conceived by league Presidents, is designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team captain and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a predetermined set of criteria.
“The NEC has historically placed a very strong emphasis on good sportsmanship and we continue see the benefits of that commitment throughout our regular season and championship season competition,” said Noreen Morris, NEC Commissioner. “This year, eleven (11) of
the possible fifteen (15) institutions eligible for the award were recognized for their dedication to playing with dignity and respect for their sport and their opponents. On behalf of the NEC Council of Presidents, I congratulate both our spring award winners as well as all of the institutions that received a team sportsmanship award this year. We truly appreciate the continued efforts made to set a good example for their peers as well as the fans and youngsters attending the events."
