Smithfield, RI -- The Central Connecticut men's cross country dynasty showed no signs of slowing down. The Blue Devils won their seventh consecutive NEC Men's Cross Country title on Saturday at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI.
CCSU is one of just three NEC sports programs to win seven straight conference championships, and the only men's cross country program to do so. The string of seven straight titles matches Mount St. Mary's women's tennis (1989-95) and trails only Quinnipiac women's cross country (eight straight, 2005-12).
On a cool, sunny day on Bryant’s campus, five Blue Devils crossed the finish line in the top-ten. CCSU finished with a final score of 30 with an average team time of 25:25, matching the program's third lowest NEC Championship score.
Sacred Heart's
Sean Ferguson (Smithtown, NY/St. John the Baptist) claimed the NEC individual title, becoming the first Pioneer on the men’s side to be named NEC Cross Country Outstanding Performer. After missing last season, the senior came back and covered the 8K course in a new course record time of 24.51.2.
Crossing the finish line just six seconds behind Ferguson was CCSU's
Ryan Hertzog (Glenville, PA/Robert Morris) with a time of 24:57.7. Rounding out the top-five finishers were Saint Francis U’s
Bryce England (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg) in third, Fairleigh Dickinson’s
Darrel Gooding (Somerset, NJ/Franklin Township) in fourth and a third Blue Devil,
Matt Walker (Southington, CT/Southington) in fifth place.
CCSU's
Austin Trainor (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) was the top freshman finisher coming in at sixth place, earning NEC Freshman of the Year honors with a time of 25:28.6.
Sacred Heart finished in second place as a team after turning in a score of 79 with a team average time of 26:12. Bryant took third with 91 points while Saint Francis U and Mount St. Mary’s took fourth and fifth spots, respectively. St. Francis Brooklyn, Fairleigh Dickinson and Wagner rounded out the eight-team field.
