Back On Top: Fairleigh Dickinson Emerges as NEC Women's Golf Champion

The Knights edge defending champion LIU Brooklyn by three strokes to win NEC Crown

DAYTONA BEACH, FL --
Fairleigh Dickinson held off LIU Brooklyn in the final round of the Northeast Conference Women's Golf Championship to win by three strokes and return to Teaneck, NJ as conference champion. FDU freshman Gabriela Santini (San Juan, Puerto Rico/San Jose) earned the individual medalist honors. The 54-hole Championship was held at the LPGA International Jones Course. 

As the Northeast Conference champion, Fairleigh Dickinson earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. This is the Knights' fifth Conference Title and the first since 2011. 

The Knights finished the 54-hole tournament with a team score of 939 (+75). The Blackbirds finished at 942 (+78). Fairleigh Dickinson, which began the day in second place and ahead of LIU Brooklyn by three strokes, played neck-and-neck throughout the front nine. The lead exchanged several times on the back nine but despite a two different lightning delays that totaled 2:07, Santini played a solid final round and scored a two-under par 70 to hold off the Blackbirds. Santini's 70 was the only under-par score of the tournament. Santini shot, who entered Championship Sunday tied for fourth and seven strokes off the leader, carded rounds of 79-75-70. Santini is the third Knight to claim the top of the leaderboard and the first since Mariana Juaristi won the title in 2013. 

In the team standings Wagner placed third (948), Sacred Heart fourth (951), Saint Francis U  fifth (959), Central Connecticut State sixth (973) and St. Francis Brooklyn (1051) seventh. 

Saint Francis U's Taylar Jaramillo (Belen, NM/Belen) was the Individual Runner-up and finished nine-over par. The junior scored 73-74-78. Sacred Heart's Ellen Nighbor (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Gelnbard West) was 10-over in third (77-75-74), Wagner's Noelle Maertz (Brooklyn, NY/Mother Seton) finished fourth and Cristina Felip (Barcelona, Spain/IES Joaquim Blume) from LIU Brooklyn rounded out the top-five. 

The top-10 finishers earned All-Tournament team honors.
