Loretto, PA -- Central Connecticut extended its dynasty on Saturday, winning its eighth straight NEC Men's Cross Country Championship. In doing so, the Blue Devils became just the second NEC program in any sport to win eight consecutive conference titles. The Blue Devils scored 43 points at the 8K course in Loretto, PA to defeat Sacred Heart by 10 points.
With the victory, CCSU tied Quinnipiac women's cross country, which won eight in a row from 2005-12, for the most consecutive NEC championships. The Blue Devils placed five runners finish in the top-13, including senior
Tyler Raymond (Terryville, CT/Terryville), who crossed the finish line second with a time of 26:57.6. Sophomores
Austin Trainer (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) and
Alex Norstrom (Coventry, CT/Coventry) finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Trainer posted a time of 28:03.7 while Norstrom followed just 3.2 seconds behind in 28:06.9. Completing the top-15 for Central Connecticut were
Derek French (Norwich, CT/Norwich Free Academy) and
Malcolm Connor (Nronx, NY/Trumbull). The pair finished with times of 28:13.9 and 28:21.9 to finish 11th and 13th, respectively. All five earned All-Conference honors.
Continuing his dominance this season,
Connor Rog (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Prep) won the NEC individual title with a time of 26:48.4, more than nine seconds ahead of the field. He finished first of 69 runners to claim the NEC Outstanding Runner award. Rog, who won Saint Francis U's Father Bede Invitational in September, also received five NEC Athlete of the Week awards this season. Rog's win marked the second year in a row a Sacred Heart runner won the individual title. SHU's Sean Ferguson was the first to cross the tape a year ago.
Wagner's
Liam Harris (Cork, Ireland/Kent School (CT)) finished just 33 seconds behind Rog to take third place overall and earn the NEC Freshman of the Year award. Harris was one of the top freshmen racing in the NEC all season and won three NEC Rookie of the Week awards.
Sacred Heart finished second with 43 points, while host Saint Francis U finished third with 53 points. Mount St. Mary's scored 120 points for a fourth-place finish, while Wagner completed the top five with 145 points. In sixth place was Bryant (151), followed by St. Francis Brooklyn (154). Fairleigh Dickinson rounded out the eight team field (204).
