Brooklyn Heights, NY -- Top-seeded St. Francis Brooklyn won its third NEC men’s soccer title in four years and seventh in program history after defeating second-seeded Saint Francis U, 1-0 in double overtime on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The golden goal came with 3:37 left in the second overtime session after St. Francis Brooklyn was awarded a penalty kick when senior forward
Yussuf Olajide (Brooklyn, NY/IMG Academy) was taken down just inside the left corner of the 18-yard box. Junior forward
Lukas Hauer (Wolfach, Germany/BSZ Waldkirch) stepped up to take the kick and found the back of the net for the 1-0 win.
It was a defensive battle between the top two defensive teams in the NEC. SFBK goalkeeper
Roberto Bazzichetto (San Vendemiano, Italy/G. Marchesini) came up big with a diving save at the 23:25 mark when
Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary’s Catholic) fired a shot on goal from in close.
Marcus Rojas
(Fremond, CA/Bellarmine College Preparatory) also came up big for his squad. At the 7:17 mark of the second half, the senior goalkeeper came out to challenge a
Leonard Kirschner (Schleswig, Germany/Domschule) shot and was able to fight it off.
St. Francis Brooklyn did not allow a goal against NEC opponents during the regular season and the same rang true for the postseason as the Terriers have not allowed a goal in the last 887:23.
Bazzichetto made three saves for the Terriers. Rojas stopped three shots for the Red Flash.
Senior midfielder
Salvatore Barone (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian), who scored the game-winning goal in the semifinals against Sacred Heart, earned the Tournament MVP award
With the win, St. Francis Brooklyn also earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will find out their opponent on Monday when the field is announced at 1 pm on NCAA.com.
