LIU Brooklyn has a lot of hardware to lug home from Staten Island. On a day highlighted by Brendon Rodney running the world’s fastest 200m time, the Blackbirds scored 158 points to fly to a third consecutive men’s team title at the NEC Indoor Track & Field Championships. In addition to the team trophy, the Blackbirds sank their talons into three of six major individual post-meet awards. Rodney, who accounted for 26 points, captured the NEC Most Outstanding Sprinter honor. British-born Adam Walker-Khan won both horizontal jumps en-route to securing the NEC Most Outstanding Jumper accolade. Freshman sprinter Caleb Williams earned the NEC Most Outstanding Rookie performer award after scoring 12 points. The Blackbirds dominated sprints, sealing the team title when the 200m dash results went final. Rodney, who entered as the world leader with a 20.52 seed time, blazed around the track in 20.46 to crush the meet record he set last year and increase his world lead. The 36 points, which came from LIU sprinters sweeping first through sixth places, tilted the meet in the Blackbirds’ favor for good. Rodney also won the 60m dash in 6.78, leading LIU’s 33-point effort in that event. Central Connecticut, which has won the last two outdoor titles but is still searching for its first indoor team crown since 2011, collected 115 points to take second for the second consecutive year. CCSU secured 10 points from sophomore Sam Borecki's triumph in the pole vault. The second-year Blue Devil won the event at 2015 NEC outdoor title meet, too. The Blue Devils, who have strung together seven straight NEC cross country team titles, tallied 19 points in the 3,000m run and another 16 in the 3K. Sacred Heart’s Sean Ferguson proved to be the individual distance king though. His Ironman-like performance yielded 28 points for the Pioneers and earned him the NEC Indoor Most Valuable Performer award. Ferguson won the 3K and the 5K and finished second to CCSU’s Joe Gioielli in the mile, logging IC4A qualifying times in all three events. SHU, which received a pair of bronze medal performances from sophomore Trevor Guerrera in the 800m and mile, totaled 96 points for a third-place finish on the team leader board. Mount St. Mary’s Chase Boyle snared the NEC Most Outstanding Thrower honor. He won the weight throw with an IC4A mark and picked up two points in the shot put. Mark Ramsey’s win in the shot put helped Fairleigh Dickinson (81.5) overtake Saint Francis U (78.5) for fourth in the team standings.
