Daytona Beach, FL -- The 2016 Northeast Conference Women’s Golf Championship will live in history as the closest finish since the inaugural championship in 1998. Fairleigh Dickinson fended off a late charge by Sacred Heart and won its sixth title by one stroke on the 18
th hole of the Par 73, 6,136 yard Hills Course at LPGA International.
Sacred Heart freshman Chelsea Sedlar (229, +10) claimed NEC individual medalist honors. Pioneer junior Ellen Nighbor (230, +11) and Fairleigh Dickinson junior Rebecca Wright (230, +11) tied for second place. Sacred Heart sophomore Abigail Hood (231, +12) and FDU freshman Anneke Strobach (231, +12) tied for fourth place to round out the top five.
The Knights defended their title thanks to Knight freshman Celeste McLean and Wright’s third round team low scores of 75 and 76. Fairleigh Dickinson needed every one of the teams’ six birdies Sunday to overcome a five-stroke deficit at the turn.
Sacred Heart (+59) finished as the runner-up and Wagner (+79) claimed third place. Saint Franics University, Central Connecticut and St. Francis Brooklyn rounded out the team scores.
