Bronx, NY -- St. Francis Brooklyn fell to the Fordham in overtime, 3-2, in first round NCAA Tournament action in front of 634 fans at chilly Jack Coffey Field on Thursday evening.
Fordham scored with just under five minutes left in the first overtime period as sophomore defender Joergen Oland notched the game-winner for the Rams off a breakaway. The Terriers held two leads in the match but were unable to hold on for the victory, which would have been their first in the NCAA's since 1978.
Senior All-Northeast Conference performers
Leo Folla and
Dominick Falanga teamed up for the first goal of the match in the 9th minute of the opening half. Folla sent a throw in to the top of the box, which eventually bounced to Falanga after the two squads battled in the air for possession. Falanga then fired a shot that was blocked by a Fordham defender, however, the ball squirted to a wide open Folla, who then sent a low shot into the right-corner of the net from 15 yards out. It was the third tally of the season for Folla and second helper for Falanga.
Senior midfielder Jannik Loebe tied the game for Fordham in the 72nd minute on a 30 yard blast to the upper right corner of the net. However, the Terriers answered just seconds later off the kick-off that followed the Rams' goal. Senior forward
Nadim Saqui took advantage of the Rams' unsettled defense and shocked the home crowd with an unassisted tally just seconds later. Saqui was credited with his fourth goal in the last four games after he was able to deflect the ball off of Rams' junior keeper Rashid Nuhu.
Once again, the Rams would get the equalizer as senior defender Matthew Lewis took a direct kick from their keeper Nuhu and beat Terriers' senior keeper
Roberto Bazzichetto from 10 yards out.
Oland gave the hosts the victory at 95:07 of overtime as he beat Bazzichetto from eight yards out after a shot by Connor DeFilippis.
Fordham outshot the Terriers by an slim 8-7 margin in the contest.
The Terriers, who had been unbeaten in ten straight matches, finished another outstanding season with a record of 14-5-1 and won their fourth Northeast Conference Championship in the past five years.
