South Bend, IN -- The Robert Morris University women's basketball dropped its NCAA Tournament First Round game to the top seed in the Lexington Regional, Notre Dame, by a score of 77-47 this evening from Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.
The loss concludes the careers of the most successful senior class in Robert Morris (22-11, 14-4 NEC) history in Janee Brown, Rebeca Navarro, and Anna Niki Stamolamprou. The trio were a part of 78 overall victories and 53 Northeast Conference (NEC) wins during their four seasons in Moon Township, all while collecting three NEC Tournament titles (2014, 2016, 2017), a pair of NEC regular season crowns (2014, 2017), and four consecutive trips to the NEC Championship Game.
Stamolamprou led all scorers with 19 points, thanks to a 5-of-11 effort from beyond the arc. Megan Smith added 10 points for the Colonials, along with seven points each from Navarro and Ja'lynn Burton-Jones.
"I'm so proud of this group," said Charlie Buscaglia, who completed his first season as head coach after spending the previous 13 seasons on staff. "We knew who we were going into tonight and that goes deeper than basketball. The legacy of the senior class is special and I know they will be successful in all that they do."
Notre Dame (31-3, 15-1 ACC) came out of the gates strong, jumping out to a 10-0 lead. RMU would dust itself off and counter with a 10-0 run of its own to create an early deadlock. Nia Adams scored the first points of the game for the Colonials, followed by a pair of triples from Stamolamprou. Navarro closed the stretch with a jumper from the elbow to draw even with the Fighting Irish.
"We prepared the same (heading into tonight's game) and stuck to our routines," said Navarro. "We were able to fight through until the end."
The hosts responded with 12 consecutive points and 14 of the next 16 to carry a 24-12 lead into the second quarter.
After Notre Dame made it a 14-point game with a Brianna Turner layup, Burton-Jones and Nadège Pluviose scored six of the next eight points to make it 28-18. The freshman point guard tallied a pair of buckets during the stretch, including an acrobatic scoop shot just past the outstretched arms of Turner.
RMU kept the deficit around 10 for the majority of the second frame before a couple of layups in the final 1:52 made it 39-25 at halftime. After three points from the Fighting Irish to begin the third, Stamolamprou completed a rare four-point play to pull the Colonials within 13. However, that was as close as the visitors would get as Notre Dame closed the stanza by scoring 19 of the next 29 points.
Arike Ogunbowale and Marina Mabrey each registered 15 points to pace the Fighting Irish, who had four players total in double-figures.
Stamolamprou, the 2017 NEC Player of the Year and two-time NEC Tournament MVP, closes her career with 1,815 points, 633 rebounds, 373 assists, and 162 steals – being just one of two players (Artemis Spanou, 2010-14) in program history to reach each one of those numbers.
Navarro finishes her four years by shooting 36.8 percent (189-of-514) from beyond the arc and shares the program record for career games played of 128 with Brown.
Brown established new career bests in points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, and minutes played as a senior and finished second in the NEC in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.41.
"I'm going to miss my teammates and this coaching staff," said Stamolamprou. "Coming to Robert Morris was the best decision in my life."
