Bulldogs Battle, Fall to #14 Oklahoma in NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament

Norman, OK -- Facing off against No. 14 Oklahoma in its fourth straight NCAA appearance, the Bryant University men's tennis team fell, 4-0, in the opening round on Friday afternoon in Norman, OK.

Redshirt sophomore Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) and sopmore Michael Plutt (Weston, Fla.) both made history by becoming the first Bryant players to win a set in the NCAA Tournament. Bryant also became the first NEC team to have two players capture a set in NCAA competition. Kuhar rolled to a 6-0 win in the first set over No. 32 Andrew Harris and Plutt won the second set, 6-3, over Adrian Oetzbach. Kuhar dropped the second set, 6-3, but both matches went unfinished.

The Sooners (16-10) captured the doubles point from the Bulldogs (12-14) after winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles. The Oklahoma pair of Jochen Bertsch and Adrian Oetzbach first took down senior John Templeman (Midland, Mich.) and junior Nick Lamart (Raleigh, N.C.), 6-0, at three. The No. 66 duo in the country Florin Bragusi and Alex Ghilea solidified the first point for the Sooners, topping Bryant's sophomore pair of Artur Jakubowski (Dallas, Texas) and Plutt, 6-2, at two.

Arnaud Restifo pushed the host's lead to two after defeating senior Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.), 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. No. 47th ranked Ghilea collected the Sooners' third point with a 6-4, 6-1 win over junior Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at No. 2 singles. Ranked 113th in the country in singles play, Bragusi solidified the Sooners' 4-0 NCAA first round victory with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Jakubowski at No. 3 singles.

The Sooners will move on to face No. 18 Mississippi State in tomorrow's NCAA Second Round.

Bryant finished 12-14 on the year and won its fourth straight NEC Championship.
