College Grove, TN – Northeast Conference (NEC) individual men's golf champion
Anton Frondelius (Munkedal, Sweden / The Gunnery) completed play today with a score of 12-over par, 228, in the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship College Grove Regional, a three-day, 54-hole competition, hosted by Middle Tennessee State University.
The highlight of the week for the history-making Frondelius, who became
the first Seahawk men's golfer to ever win the NEC individual crown in Daytona Beach, FL back on April 30, was a second-round even par 72 on Tuesday that was sandwiched between a pair of 78's on Monday and Wednesday. His 78-72-78-228 score placed him in a tie for 55th place in the 75-man field.
"Any time you get to tee it up with five of the top 25 teams in the country it's a great experience," said Seahawk head coach
Christopher Fourman. "We had our sights set on the national championship and we are disappointed that the season is over, but there are so many positive takeaways. Anton had a prolific golf career for us and capped it off with three wins this year and a conference championship.
"He also knocked off a few top 100 ranked opponents at this regional," Fourman added. "My hats off to Anton. I am going to miss him very much but am confident that his best golf ahead is ahead of him."
The College Grove Regional, one of six 54-hole regional tournaments held throughout the nation this week, was held at the 7,383-yard Grove Club and consisted of 13 teams and 10 individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional advance to the finals.
Those five teams that now advance to the NCAA Championships, held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, IL, include UCF (-1), Vanderbilt (+1), Kennesaw State (+1), Clemson and Lipscomb (+5), led by junior Dawson Armstrong who followed up a course-record 7-under 65 on Tuesday with a 2-over 74 today to hold on for the individual title. Armstrong held off Kennesaw State's Chris Guglielmo, who had the round of the day (4-under 72) in the week's toughest scoring conditions on Wednesday, to finish alone in second overall.
Troy's Cam Norman was the top individual not on a team advancing, qualifying him for the National Championship after a 3-under 213 three-round score.
