Geneva, NY – It was a battle between teams featuring two completely different styles of play. In the end, the Bryant defense held true against the Hobart offense.

Bryant (10-7), the second seed, won its fifth Northeast Conference men's lacrosse title in six years in workmanlike fashion, coming from behind to down top-seeded Hobart, 5-4, in Geneva, NY.

Hobart (9-7) struck first just 1:05 into the game when freshman Eric Holden (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury) scored to put Hobart up 1-0. Bryan Hancock (Highlands Ranch, CO/Mountain Vista) scored his 16th goal of the year at the 5:03 mark of the second quarter to give the Statesmen a 3-1 lead, but Bryant cut the lead to 3-2 at halftime on a Brett Baker (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) tally with 3:54 to play.

The Bulldogs made their move in their third quarter, netting three consecutive goals, including a man-up goal from All-NEC attacker Tucker James (Essex Fells, NJ/Bergen Catholic), to take a 5-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

At the 11:35 mark of the final stanza, NEC Player of the Year Frank Brown (Salamanca, NY/Silver Creek), scored his 32nd goal of the season to pull the Statesmen within one. But Bulldogs’ goalkeeper and Tournament MVP James Werner (New Rochelle, NY/Fordham Prep.) answered the call, denying Hobart from securing the equaliizer with two saves down the stretch.

Werner made 10 saves, holding the Hobart offense to its lowest scoring total in a game this season.

Cam Ziegler ( Carlsbad, CA/La Costa Canyon) had a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs.

Overall, Hobart held a 34-24 shot advantage, but Bryant won the faceoff battle, taking 9-of-13.

Bryant returns to the NCAA Tournament and will find out its opponent when the field is announced on Sunday, May 7, at 9 pm on ESPNU.
