Smithfield, RI -- Following the closest team finish in 13 years, Central Connecticut won its first NEC Women’s Cross Country Championship since 1999 with the low score of 46 on a rain-filled Saturday at Bryant University.

CCSU sophomore Angie Rafter (Danielson, CT/Killingly) capped an impressive 2018 campaign by defeating the field of 80 by more than 10 seconds over the 5K course to claim the NEC individual title and the NEC Outstanding Performer honor.

Rafter crossed the finish line first in 18:03.6, followed by four fellow Blue Devils who all placed in the top-15 to seal the deal. Sophomore Megan Brawner (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard) was the second Central finisher and fourth overall with a time of 18:23.0. Seniors Dawn Hubbell (North Haven, CT/North Haven) and Madeline Mondo (Marlborough, CT/RHAM) clocked in at 18:52.0 and 18:57.9 to place 12th and 14th, respectively. CCSU freshman Ashley Dana (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) then sprinted to the finish line to clinch the team title with a 15th finish at 19:07.7, and also claimed the 2018 NEC Freshman of the Year award.

Saint Francis U raced neck-and-neck with the Blue Devils throughout, falling just two points short of taking the title back to Loretto. Senior Hannah Dorian (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) came in second, posting a time of 18:14.5.

After taking the silver in the 2017 NEC Championship, Sacred Heart graduate student Tara Connelly (Holmdel, NJ/Saint John Vianney) raced well again with a sixth place finish (18:45.5) to lead the Pioneers to a third place showing with 62 points.

Mount St. Mary’s senior Erin Jaskot (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) garnered the bronze medal with a 18:20.5 finish to lead the Mount to a fourth place result with 74 points.

In fifth was Wagner (141 points), followed by LIU Brooklyn (191) and Robert Morris (194). Fairleigh Dickinson finished eighth (227), Bryant ninth (248), and St. Francis Brooklyn 10th (267).
