Staten Island, NY - Central Connecticut leapt its way to the lead on the first day of the 2018 NEC Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

Led by Marquis Ward's victory, the Blue Devils picked up 23 points in the high jump. CCSU, which won its lone NEC Indoor team title in 2011, finished the day with 45 points to build a 16-point advantage in the team standings over second-place Mount St. Mary's.

Four-time defending team champion LIU Brooklyn has yet to score, but the Blackbirds are poised to shoot up the team leaderboard with a heavy presence in Saturday's sprint finals. LIU advanced three to the 60m final, five to the 200m final and four to the 400m final.

Taking second and third, respectively, Alex Norstrom and Roberto Piotto gave 14 points to CCSU in the 3,000m run, but they were unable to dethrone Saint Francis U's Bryce England. Coming off his 2017 NEC Cross Country individual crown, England crossed the line in 8:25.33 to win gold indoors for the second year in a row.

Mount St. Mary's produced two of the four event champions crowned during Friday's schedule with both victories coming in the field.

Mount senior Brenden Chavis successfully defending the weight throw crown he first captured in 2017.

Meanwhile, long jumper DJ Workcuff passed on his last three attempts despite being within five centimeters of the meet record. Workcuff, who was also busy registering a qualifying time in the 60m dash preliminaries, leapt 7.45m to strike gold.

Thirteen event titles will be up for grabs on Championship Saturday with all track finals set to stream live at NECFrontRow.com.
