Staten Island, NY - Saint Francis U piled up 25 points in the pole vault while ascending to the top of the team standings during the first day of the 2018 NEC Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

The Red Flash totaled 39 points to take a slim lead over four-time defending champion Sacred Heart. The Pioneers, who tallied 34 first-day points, cleaned up in the 3,000m run.

Closing out the Friday schedule, Sacred Heart's Kate Svensen led a 1-2-3 medal sweep. The decorated senior broke the tape in 10:02.82 with teammates Lindsay Lucas and Tara Connelly close behind.

SFU freshman Taylor Weaver became the first record breaker of the meet. Surpassing the record that Robert Morris alumna Bethany Ledford set in 2015 (3.75m), the rookie pole vaulter cleared 3.90m to spearhead a 1-2-4-6 Red Flash finish in the event.

Mount St. Mary's, which finished the day in third place with 24 points, put three women on the medal stand. Long jumper Elizabeth Shodiya snagged a silver while shot putter Erin Sample and pole vaulter Moriah Fitzgerald, a former champion, earned bronze status.

Fourth-place Central Connecticut picked up more than half of its first-day from McKenna Kilian win in the long jump. The junior became the first-ever Blue Devil to strike gold in the event.

LIU Brooklyn, which is poised to make significant gains in Saturday's sprint finals, scored its first gold medal of the meet out in the field. Topping a field that featured four women with ECAC Championship qualifying seed mark, sophomore Taylor Parker put the shot 14.38 to edge Robert Morris freshman Estelle Katende for the title.

Thirteen event titles will be up for grabs on Championship Saturday with all track finals set to stream live at NECFrontRow.com.
