Staten Island, NY - Central Connecticut was ready this time and the Blue Devils' ability to handle the impending situation resulted in the program's second-ever NEC Indoor Championships men's team title.

The CCSU Blue Devils used the high jump and 5K to build a noticeable lead in the team standings on Friday, but, as usual, four-time defending champion LIU Brooklyn was set up to make significant gains during Saturday's sprint finals.

This time would be different. CCSU didn't let the Blackbirds complete their patented comeback. Central Connecticut benefitted from four silver medal and four bronze medal performances Saturday, finishing the meet with 132 points to win the program's first indoor crown since 2011.

LIU Brooklyn, which was held scoreless on Friday, put up 110 points to earn the runner-up trophy. Mount St. Mary's took third place on the team leader board with 93.5 points.

Saint Francis U's Bryce England completed the grueling 3K-5K distance double before anchoring the DMR team to victory. His three gold medals resulted in the NEC Indoor Most Valuable Performer (MVP) award along with the NEC Most Outstanding Track Performer (Distance) accolade.

England edged Sacred Heart's Trevor Guerrera, who turned in a gutsy mid-distance double, for the two major awards. Guerrera won golds in the mile and 800m and later ran on both relays.

Mount St. Mary's sophomore Justin Kimble struck gold in the 60m dash before adding a silver later in the day at the 200m distance. He squeaked by LIU Brooklyn's Collin Sewell in the race for the NEC Most Outstanding Track Performer (Sprints) award. Sewell, who was responsible for 17.5 points, was one of the Blackbirds' three individual sprint champions.

Central Connecticut's Marquis Ward was responsible for a second-place finish in the triple jump on Saturday after capturing gold in Friday's long jump competition. He shared the NEC Moust Outstanding Field Performer (Jumps) award with Fairleigh Dickinson's Brenden Perez, who won the triple jump and was the runner-up in the long jump.

After Ward, distance runner Alex Norstrom was CCSU's highest scorer. The fourth-year Blue Devil earned silver medals in the 3,000m and 5,000m races. Sprinter Akiel Smith was also a double medalist for Central Connecticut, taking second in the 60m and third in the 200m.

Bryant freshman thrower Christopher Fasano has some hefty hardware to bring back to Smithfield. The rookie, who picked up three points in yesterday's weight throw, topped the field in Saturday's shot put final. His efforts resulted in the NEC Most Outstanding Rookie honor along with the NEC Most Outstanding Field Performer (Throws) award.
