West Windsor, NJ -- The preseason favorites and top seeds did not disappoint at the 2018 NEC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, NJ.
On a glorious spring day, the Bryant men and LIU Brooklyn women shined under the sunny skies. The Bulldogs became just the second school in NEC history to win five straight NEC titles following a 4-0 win over second-seeded Wagner, while the Blackbirds repeated as women's champion with a 4-1 conquest of second-seeded Bryant. The championship event, for the 18th straight year, was contested at the award winning Mercer facility.
Bryant joined Fairleigh Dickinson (12) and Monmouth (9) as the only schools in conference history to win five NEC crowns. The Bulldogs are the lone institution to win five straight titles in the team scoring format era that began in 1999. Monmouth won six in a row from 1990-95 when the title was determined by individual scoring.
After the Bulldogs took the doubles point, Bryant junior
Artur Jakubowski (Dallas, TX/JJ Pearce) first won at #3 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and was followed soon after by senior
Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colorado/Discovery Canyon Campus), who won his #2 flight match, 6-4, 6-4. Needing just one match to clinch, the honor went to freshman
Wilson Dong (Bradenton, FL/IMG Academy), who posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory to set off a raucous celebration for the winners.
Lorenz, who went 2-0 in singles and doubles over the weekend, was named the first-ever NEC Tournament MVP, and was joined on the All-Tournament team by redshirt junior
Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, RI/Smithfield) and senior
Jorge Ortiz Garcia (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico/Cupeyville School) from Bryant. Wagner, which reached its first-ever NEC final, was represented on the All-Tourney team by seniors
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and
Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan). Also named to the team were FDU freshman
Maciej Autuch (Gdynia, Poland/Sopocka Pomorskie Tenisowa) and Saint Francis U freshman
Sebastian Pinos (Quito, Ecuador/Compuinformatica).
In winning the program's fourth NEC championship, LIU Brooklyn was put to the test by a game Bryant squad. After the Blackbirds won a hotly contested doubles point, reigning NEC Player of the Year
Anna Grigoryan (Moscow, Russia) was her typical dominant self with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #1 singles. The Blackbirds made the match score 3-0 when sophomore
Jessica Brzozowska (Melbourne, Australia/McKinnon Secondary College) rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win at the #2 flight. The Bulldogs made it interesting after freshman
Arianna Oropeza (Weston, FL/Cypress Bay) picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win at #5 singles, but it was LIU newcomer
Clemence Krug (Reims, France/Lycee Jean Jaures) who would provide the clincher for the Blackbirds. The sophomore won the first set 6-2, then came from behind to post a 7-5 second set victory at #6 singles to send LIU dancing to the NCAA Tournament.
Grigoryan improved to 23-7 on the year and was named the NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player. She was joined on the team by Brzozowska and Krug. Bryant seniors
Nina Luiggi (Nottingham, England/Minster School) and
Stefanie Arroyo (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Catolico Notre Dame) also earned All-Tournament honors, as did FDU sophomore
Tatiana Eftenoiu (Bucharest, Romania/Colegiul National Gheorghe Lazar) and Mount St. Mary's sophomore
Hannah Davis (Mokena, IL/Providence Catholic).
The Bryant men and LIU Brooklyn women will now go on to represent the NEC in the upcoming NCAA Championships in mid-May.
