Miami, FL -- The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team saw their season come to a close Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Blackbirds, who were competing in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tennis Championships, fell to host and #16 nationally-ranked Miami, 4-0.
 
The Blackbirds had a strong showing in the doubles, but couldn't overcome the Hurricanes. Miami had a win in the No. 3 doubles spot, before the No. 68 nationally-ranked duo of Perez-Somarriba and Roldan beat LIU's Anna Grigoryan and Ana Leonte, 6-2. In the No.2 doubles spot, sophomores Sasha Bollweg and Jessica Brzozowska were holding their own, and only trailed 4-2 when the point was clinched and the match suspended.
 
In singles, two of the top three players for Miami rank in the top 75 in the nation, and they both had quick wins to help seal the victory. In the No.1 spot, NEC Player of the Year Anna Grigoryan faced off against the No.3 nationally ranked player, Estela Perez-Somarriba, who was the highest ranked player she's faced all season. Perez-Somarriba won, 6-0, 6-1, to give Miami the 2-0 team advantage. At No. 3 singles, Daniella Roldan beat Bollweg, 6-1, 6-2, to make it 3-0, and the match was clinched shortly after, when #69 nationally-ranked Sinead Lohan defeated Brzozowska, 6-1, 6-1 in the No.2 singles spot.
 
One of the highlights for the Blackbirds was the play of sophomore Jennifer Gogova in the No. 5 singles spot. Gogova, going up against Ulyana Shirokova, held her own, forcing a tie breaker in the first set, 7-6, which she was still competing in when the match was called.
 
With the loss, the Blackbirds finish the season 17-5 overall.
