WEEK 1 STATS: .454 BA (5-for-11), HR, 5 RBI, 4 runs, SB, .538 OBP
Gustin kicked off his collegiate career by making three consecutive starts at second base during Bryant’s three-game set at Abilene Christian. Gustin batted .455 (5-for-11) with one homer, five RBI and four runs scored. Making his first collegiate appearance in the 8-7 series-opening victory, the left-handed hitter droves in two runs. He connected on a third-inning RBI groundout that bumped the Bulldogs’ lead to 3-0 and later ripped a run-scoring single in the sixth frame. Gustin also put his defensive prowess on display, making a diving grab to start an inning-ending double play with Bryant clinging to a one-run lead in the eighth. Gustin launched his first collegiate homer in Game 2, breaking a 2-2 tie by leading off the third inning with a solo blast. He reached base safely four times during the rubber match, including a two-run single that gave Bryant a 5-0 advantage in the fourth frame.
NEC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
STEVE THEETGE, BRYANT
Sr., LHP, 6-3, 210 lbs, Syracuse, NY/Cicero North
WEEK 1 STATS: 1 start, 0.00 ERA, 6.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K
Theetge opened his senior season by spinning 6.0 scoreless innings in Sunday’s rubber game at Southland Conference member Abilene Christian. Earning an 11-1 victory, the 6-foot-3 southpaw limited the opposition to only two hits and two walks while fanning four. Theetge held ACU hitless in five of six frames. After an infield single and a two-out double set the table for ACU in the second inning, Bryant’s senior southpaw ended the threat with a strikeout and did not permit another base hit the rest of the way. Theetge, who pitched to an 0.67 WHIP, retired 13 of the final 16 batters he faced. The Empire State product fired 49 of 79 pitches for strikes en-route to the 24th victory of his collegiate career.
