2000 NEC Men's Tennis All-Conference Teams

Piscataway, NJ -- Fronted by #1 singles player Oscar Lopez (Torrevieja, Spain/I.B. Saavedra Fajardo), UMBC registered a near complete sweep of the 1999-2000 NEC Men’s Tennis All-Conference awards as voted on by the league’s head coaches. The Retrievers earned all-conference recognition in five of six singles flights and all three doubles flights. UMBC head coach Keith Puryear, who led the Retrievers to the school’s first men’s tennis title in April, was named NEC Coach of the Year.

Lopez emerged as the league’s top player this season, posting a 23-7 overall record despite a difficult non-conference slate. Lopez, who earns all-NEC recognition for the second consecutive season at #1 singles, tallied a 3-0 mark in league play. Lopez was a first team Academic All-American last year and the NEC’s Men’s Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year. His record over the last two seasons at UMBC is 48-12.

Preventing a UMBC clean sweep is Robert Morris junior Mario Woldt (Andernach, Germany/Kurfuerst-Salentin Gymnasium) at #2 singles. Woldt went 19-12 on the season and was an impressive 7-1 against NEC competition.

The league’s top player at #3 singles is UMBC junior Vincent Granito (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Township). A two-time NEC all-conference selection - he picked up honors at #4 singles in 1998-99 - Granito closed out his season with a 17-10 overall record and a 3-0 mark in conference play.

At #4 singles, all-conference honors go to UMBC senior Matt Lennox (Baltimore, MD/Kimberto Waldorf School). Lennox made great strides in 1999-2000 after finishing just 5-12 last season. He put together a 16-8 record and went 2-0 against league competition.

Now a two-time all-NEC pick at #5 singles, sophomore Eric Nudo (Greenbelt, MD/Roosevelt) was a consistent force all season for UMBC. Nudo amassed a 22-8 record on the season and compiled a 2-0 mark in the conference. His two year record at UMBC improved to 38-17.

UMBC’s Dimitri Bondar (Ontario, Canada/Northview Secondary) is the coaches pick at the #6 singles flight. Bondar moved into the starting lineup this season and led the NEC with 24 wins (against just seven losses). He also tallied a perfect 4-0 record against NEC opposition.

Leading the UMBC sweep of the doubles awards is the #1 team of Oscar Lopez and Matt Lennox. The pair finished out the year with a 10-4 record, including 2-1 in league play.

Earning honors at #2 doubles is the UMBC tandem of junior Nikhil Misra (New York, NY/Arlington Senior) and Eric Nudo. Misra and Nudo registered a 12-6 record in 1999-2000 and won their only NEC doubles match during the conference tournament.

Completing the UMBC sweep is the #3 doubles duo of Vincent Granito and sophomore doubles specialist Chris Cetateanu (Forest Hills, NY/Forest Hills). A unanimous selection, the pair finished 18-4 on the season to lead the league in doubles victories. Granito and Cetateanu combined to post a 4-0 record versus NEC opposition.

After capturing NEC Women’s Coach of the Year honors in 1998-99, Puryear was recognized for the accomplishments of his men’s tennis program in 1999-2000. Now in his 11th year at the Baltimore school, Puryear guided UMBC to the school’s first NEC men’s title after finishing second in 1999. His club did not drop a match over the course of the tournament and finished with a 20-8 dual meet record on the season. UMBC earned the NEC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, where the Retrievers fell to sixth ranked Illinois, 4-0.
