Monmouth Captures Third Consecutive NEC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship

Emmitsburg, MD -- In an exciting final day of action at the Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Monmouth earned the womens title for the third consecutive year, holding off the strong challenges from Long Island and St. Francis (Pa.). Monmouth scored 137 points in winning the meet, while LIU finished with 128.5 and St. Francis (PA) scored 127. UMBC was a distant fourth with 85 points. The two-day event was held at Morgan Track on the campus of Mount St. Mary's.
Monmouth, behind a record-setting pole vault leap by Lisa Ricciardelli (3.45 meters), placed high enough in just enough events to hold off LIU's sprinters and St. Francis (Pa.)'s distance runners.
Katie Pachuta won the discus for Monmouth and the Hawks' 4x400 relay team set a new NEC mark with a time of 3:46.55.
LIU's Rea Tobitt won both the 100 (12.19) and 200-meter (25.11) dashes and the Blackbirds' Georgette Lewis (1:01.63) took top honors in the 400 hurdles. LIU's 4x100 relay squad just missed a new NEC mark as they finished first in the event with a time of 47.62.
Sacred Heart's Katherine Wrinkle established a new 3,000-meter steeplechase record as she won the event by almost 25 seconds in a time of 11:13.63.
Fairleigh Dickinson's Evelyn Cheptoo, who won the 5,000 meters by nearly 30 seconds was named the meet's Most Valuable Performer. Ricciardelli earned Most Outstanding Field Performer accolades, while Tobitt was tabbed the Most Outstanding Track performer. Monmouth's Joe Compagni was selected as NEC Coach of the Year.
