The NEC Celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Title IX

The Northeast Conference is sponsoring a yearlong celebration of women in sports commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the passage of Title IX. Along with profiles of NEC student-athletes, coaches and administrators – past and present – the Conference will look back at some of the milestone achievements of its women’s programs.

With the 40th anniversary of the legislation’s signing upon us, it is only right to recognize a number of the wonderful women who have made the Northeast Conference, and athletics as a whole, what it is today.  From Joan Martin to Susan Hofacre to Brenda Weare, numerous influential women have made unforgettable contributions to the NEC.  Two of those women  - Irma Garcia and Christie Rampone - found themselves in the spotlight on this day.

St. Francis (NY) Athletic Director Irma Garcia was chosen by the Women's Sports Foundation (WSF), in collaboration with espnW and Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT), to its 40 FOR 40 list of forty women. Garcia was included among the female pioneers who made a significant impact on society after playing sports in high school or college during the forty years of the Title IX era.

In celebration of the upcoming 40th anniversary of the signing of Title IX, the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) invited athletic departments, conferences offices and organizations across the country to nominate a female trailblazer from their institution who has made a significant impact in the area of gender equity by creating a short video illustrating their contributions. The Northeast Conference is pleased to have nominated NEC Hall of Famer and Monmouth Alumni Christie Rampone for this honor.

Our latest interview was with Beryl Piper of Central Connecticut who not only had a stellar career on the hardwood for the Blue Devils, but also ranks as one of the most successful coaches that Central has seen in the past few years. We were able to chat with Coach Piper about her thoughts on the past, present and future of women's hoops as she enters her fifth year as Head Coach of the Blue Devils.
