NEC men's tennis summary

A New Jersey school had won or shared the NEC title every year until UMBC broke through with a dominating performance in 2000. UMBC's dominance extended to the league's all-star selections, where the Retrievers were honored in five singles flights and all three doubles flights. UMBC repeated in 2001, eliminating Robert Morris in the championship finale for the second straight season.  Incredibly, the Retrievers went on to sweep postseason honors at every flight.  UMBC stopped Fairleigh Dickinson in both 2002 and 2003 to stretch its title run to four.  Quinnipiac captured its first league championship in 2004, then went on to repeat in 2005 and 2006.  FDU won its ninth crown in 2007, then earned its record tenth NEC title in 2008.  Sacred Heart walked away with its first league championship in 2009.  In one of the most exciting finals in league history, third-seeded Quinnipiac beat Sacred Heart, 4-3, to win its fourth NEC championship in 2010.  Sacred Heart avenged that loss a year later with a 4-1 win over Quinnipiac to take the 2011 title. FDU won a record 11th NEC crown in 2012 and repeated in 2013. Bryant, in just its second year of eligibility, took home the championship in 2014, beating FDU, 4-3, in a title rematch. The two teams went at it again in 2015, with the Bulldogs once again edging the Knights, 4-3. Bryant extended its streak to four with title wins over SFU in 2016 and 2017 and then became the second school in league history to win five straight after claiming the 2018 championship. The Bulldogs continued their historic run in 2019 with their sixth in a row. Bryant joined Monmouth as the only teams to win six straight titles. The Hawks' string ended in 1996, as Fairleigh Dickinson went on to win four straight from 1996-99. FDU ended Bryant's run in 2021, winning the program's 13th title, then doubled in 2022 with a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs in one of the classic battles in their longstanding rivalry. St. Francis Brookln finally broke through and won its first league title in 2023.

1999 was the first year the NEC employed a team flighted format for the tournament, with FDU ousting top seed UMBC in the championship.  The Knights earned the NEC's first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, losing to SMU.  Monmouth's Steve Frankel (1986-88) is the only three-time flight "A" champ. FDU's Kirt Cable, a two-time NEC individual champion, is the first player from St. Kitts to ever appear in the Davis Cup.  He played with the Eastern Caribbean Zone Team in 1996.
UMBC’s Oscar Lopez was named a GTE Academic All-American in both 1999 (first team) and 2000 (second team).  Monmouth's Benjamin Evenden was tabbed an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-American in 2009. FDU's Arvis Berzins became the league's first-ever four time NEC Player of the Year from 2013-16. He was also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American.
