NEC women's tennis summary

Mount St. Mary's won seven straight title from 1989-1995, the longest consecutive streak of any NEC team.   Robert Morris ended the Mount's run with its first-ever title in 1996. Central Connecticut State won the title in 1997, its first year in the NEC.  1998 was the first year the NEC employed a team-flighted format, and in a thrilling finale, first year-member UMBC wrested the title from Central Connecticut State.  The Retrievers repeated in 2000 and earned the league's first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.   UMBC lengthened its streak to five  by winning the championship from 2001-03, and did so by defeating Quinnipiac four straight times in the title match.  Quinnipiac finally broke through for its first crown in 2004 and repeated four more times from 2005-08, downing rival Long Island in the championship match on all five occasions.  The 2006 and 2007 titles were won by the Bobcats, 4-3, in the closest championship finales since the first team-flighted event in 1998.  Long Island finally broke through in 2009, defeating Quinnipiac, 4-1, for its first league crown. The Blackbirds repeated in 2010, but for the first time since 2003, Quinnipiac was not the opponent.  LIU defeated FDU, 4-2, in the title match.  Quinnipiac came back a year later to snare its sixth crown with a 4-3 triumph over FDU. FDU finished on top in 2012, winning its first NEC title since the 1988 season, then repeated in 2013 with a 4-3 thriller over the Bobcats. The Knights three-peated in 2014, making the Knights the fourth program to win at least three straight championships. Bryant won its first NEC title in 2015. FDU won its sixth championship in 2016. LIU returned to the top in 2017, then won three more to become the fourth team in NEC history to capture four straight titles. Bryant took home its second championship in 2022. LIU returned with a vengeance in 2023, tying Mount's record with its seventh NEC crown.

LIU's Selma Babic, a two-time NEC Player of the Year, became the first player in league history to qualify and compete in the NCAA Women's Singles Tournament after appearing in the ITA rankings in 2010.  Former Long Island star Maria Vago won a conference-record three straight flight "A" titles (1992-94), while achieving lofty national rankings.  Central Connecticut State's Erin Hill set an NEC singles performance record with her 97.3% winning percentage in 1997.
