Sumner earned his second NEC Player of the Week honor in as many weeks after posting the first hat trick of the season by an NEC player in a 3-0 triumph over Saint Francis U on Thursday. The senior midfielder found the back of the net in the 17th minute, and added second half insurance goals in the 56th and 85th minutes to help move the first place Lakers to a 3-0 start to league play. In doing so, Mercyhurst became the first team to defeat the Red Flash in their last 16 regular season conference matches. Sumner now has six goals on the season and ranks third in the NEC, while his three game winners are a conference best. Additionally, he is tied for the most assists (five) this season and his 17 points rank second on the circuit.
