For the second time this season, a Saint Francis U first-year player has taken home the NEC Rookie of the Week award. Addie Smith, a catcher/infielder, joined fellow classmate AB Cipalla on the awards list after her timely hitting helped lead the Red Flash to a perfect 4-0 weekend in Maryland. Scoring four times during that stretch, Smith posted a .538 batting average, a .571 on-base percentage and a .846 slugging percentage for Saint Francis U, which posted consecutive sweeps of George Mason on Saturday and UMBC on Sunday. Recording at least one hit in all four games — including multiple hits in two contests — Smith helped the Red Flash offense put up 22 runs over the weekend. Going a perfect 3-for-3 in the first game of the weekend against the Patriots on Saturday, the Nutmeg State product scored the go-ahead run on a Cipalla triple in the fifth before she crossed home for an insurance run in the seventh in the 3-1 win. In the nightcap at George Mason, her first career home run — a solo shot in the second frame — helped give Saint Francis U a lead it would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Smith’s stellar play carried into Sunday. She combined to go 3-for-7 with one run to help the Red Flash score a sweep of the Retrievers. On the season, Smith is tied for third in the conference in runs (6).
