A native of Chino Hills, CA, Zavala tossed every single pitch this past weekend to lead Wagner to a key three-game sweep of Stonehill. During that stretch, the Seahawks’ ace posted a 1.47 ERA after holding the Skyhawks to four earned runs on 17 hits and seven walks. Throughout the 19.0 innings, she also fanned 20 batters to earn her NEC-leading 10th, 11th and 12th victories of the season. Getting plenty of run support after her squad lit up the scoreboard with 10 runs in four innings, Zavala hurled a three-hit shutout to open the weekend on Sunday. She struck out eight in the clean sheet, which was her third of the season. In Sunday’s nightcap, a 5-1 victory, the sophomore fanned seven batters and allowed just one earned run on three hits and three walks. Zavala was on top of her game on Monday as well to help the Seahawks complete the three-game sweep. In 7.0 innings, she struck out five and allowed three earned runs in an 8-3 victory. This is Zavala’s second NEC Pitcher of the Week award this season. She previously took home the honor on March 18. Boasting a 3.19 ERA, which is good for fifth in the circuit, she leads the NEC in strikeouts by a wide margin, as her 137 are 27 more than the next closest competitor. In addition, Zavala ranks 23rd in the nation in strikeouts and is 49th in strikeouts per seven innings (8.1).
